Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Checks patient medical records for past histories, enters treatments and charges in computer.*
  2. Restrains animals for Veterinarian as required.*
  3. Maintains client educational material efficiently.*
  4. Applies knowledge of drawing blood, accessing veins quickly, and minimizing patient discomfort to perform testing procedures.*
  5. Performs specimen testing procedures accurately on blood, urine, or other samples according to medical orders using all related equipment and computers.*
  6. Assists Veterinarian with in-patient care, including maintaining and calculating IV fluids, drawing blood samples, and passing urithrocatheters.*
  7. Performs anesthesia induction and monitoring.*
  8. Dispenses medication and feeds patients as directed.*
  9. Communicates with patient's owner by describing medication, possible complications, and warnings.*
  10. Utilizes computer system to enter and reference patient information.*
  11. Performs necessary lab work such as x-rays, CBC's, blood profiles, urinalysis, heartworm tests, FELV/FIV tests, fecal tests, cultures, sensitivities, and fungus cultures.*
  12. Documents test results and delivers to appropriate personnel promptly.*
  13. Prepares specimens for mailing to hospitals according to practice requirements.*
  14. Ensures all materials are in exam rooms for doctors, such as otoscopes and nail clippers.*
  15. Schedules and/or performs routine maintenance of testing equipment.*
  16. Maintains cleanliness of exam rooms at all times.*
  17. Sets laboratory standards, changes operations, and provides training to staff as required.*
  18. Assists in animal care as needed.*
  19. Handles tasks related to x-ray processes, including entry of patient info, animal positioning, and form preparation.*
  20. Takes medical histories and vital signs of patients.*
  21. Admits and discharges patients.*
  22. Takes, processes, and logs prescription refills, communicates with pharmacies.*
  23. Must be able to lift 50 pounds, stoop, bend, and stand for long periods.*
  24. Other duties as assigned.*
Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED, with 1-2 years related experience and/or training, or equivalent. Certified Veterinary Technician in Florida is required.

Skills:

Proficiency in dental cleanings, charting, anesthesia, surgical prep, IV catheter placement, vaccinations, venipuncture, in-house labs, and prescriptions. Ability to work well independently and with others, take initiative, and thrive in a busy environment.
