CERTIFIED SURGICAL TECHNICIAN - FLEXSTAFF
- Implements and communicates the age-specific plan of care, providing thorough reports at shift changes and relief times. Communicates with team members regarding the need for special equipment and supplies, and implements care according to established policy.
- Participates in turnover activities and room setup for each surgical procedure, including connecting suction, electrical cords, power cables, and electrocautery; breaks down the operating room after each procedure; assists in ensuring an adequate supply of stock for patient care.
- Monitors each case to ensure all infection control measures are met and sterilization standards are followed. Establishes and maintains a sterile field, monitors aseptic techniques of the surgical team, documents activities, and takes corrective actions when necessary.
- Adheres to aseptic principles, including the use of sterile instruments and supplies. Follows procedures for decontaminating instruments and assists with instrument processing and sterilization.
- Maintains environmental controls and ensures proper waste disposal precautions.
- Performs sponge, sharp, and instrument counts with the RN according to policy. Takes appropriate actions if counts are incorrect.
- Ensures the safe and proper use of equipment and instrumentation before, during, and after surgery. Assists as needed under the surgeon's direction, holds retractors as prescribed, anticipates equipment needs, and troubleshoots equipment malfunctions.
- Assists the surgeon with patient care procedures, including proper labeling of specimens, tapping mallet, cutting suture (licensed personnel only), and performing surgical skin prep.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
ADA Essential Functions
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma or equivalent, required.
- Minimum of one (1) year experience as a Surgical Technologist, required.
- Successful completion of a nationally accredited surgical technologist program, and maintenance of a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential by the NBSTSA, required.
OR
- Completion of appropriate surgical technology training in the U.S. Armed Forces or Public Health Service.
- Must be in good standing with NYS regulations, required.
- BLS certification, preferred.
- Ability to function effectively in emergency situations.
