Major Responsibilities:
To assist in providing quality patient care in a manner which is patient-focused, technically appropriate, and cost-effective. The Surgical Technologist (ST) works under the direct supervision of a registered nurse in accordance with the Standards of Practice and within the guidelines of the Illinois Nurse Practice Act. The ST is responsible for establishing and maintaining a sterile field, a safe patient care environment, and appropriate supplies/equipment as required for the operative procedure. The ST functions as a cooperative healthcare team member in a critical care environment, treating the patient with dignity and respect.
The responsibilities include:
- Perform duties in the scrub role as assigned: prepare sterile fields, comply with departmental policies regarding specimens and instrument counts, maintain sterile boundaries, and assist in emergency situations.
- Assist in preparing the surgical field, verifying supplies and equipment, assisting with sterile supplies and instruments, and ensuring efficient use of resources.
- Maintain professional growth by completing assignments, participating in committees, and updating skills.
- Support a cooperative work environment, share knowledge, and accept team responsibilities.
- Ensure compliance with hospital policies, maintain patient confidentiality, and perform other duties as assigned.
- Maintain and support accreditation standards, including certifications and competencies.
- Promote patient safety and report issues through established channels.
- Serve as a patient advocate, resolve concerns promptly, and utilize referrals as needed.
- Participate in hospital committees, projects, and staff development activities.
- Maintain certification and CEUs annually.
- Contribute to service and quality improvement initiatives, including innovation efforts and cost containment strategies.
- Assist with staffing, resource utilization, and productivity improvements.
Additional responsibilities include mentoring staff, participating in educational activities, and supporting hospital strategies to maximize excellence and efficiency.
