Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, assists in the surgical suite during surgical procedures; functions within the protocols, practice guidelines, procedures, and physician directives of Sturdy Memorial Hospital, and the Department of Nursing in accordance with the Massachusetts rules and regulations for ancillary health care providers, CDC and OSHA standards, and other applicable regulatory or accreditation agencies.

Required Skills/Qualifications/Training/Experience

• Demonstrates knowledge of asepsis principles, sterile technique, anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
• Knowledge and skill in handling specimens, patient positioning, environmental dangers, and surgical complications.
• Manual dexterity, professional ethics, cost awareness, and proficiency in instrumentation and sutures.
• Understanding of anatomy, physiology, communication, prostheses, solutions, and anesthesia.
• Meets all responsibilities outlined in this document.
• Commitment to customer relations, quality improvement, and error prevention.
• Provides timely, positive responses to patients, co-workers, and physicians.

Preferred Skills/Qualifications/Training/Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Completed a surgical technology training program in the U.S. military or U.S. Public Health Service deemed appropriate by the commissioner.
• Certified surgical technologist credential from a recognized certifying body, maintained throughout employment.
• Employment as a surgical technologist in a surgical facility on or before July 1, 2013.
• Completed an accredited surgical technology program but not yet certified; certification obtained within 12 months of graduation.

License/Certification

• Completed a recognized surgical technology training program.
• Hold and maintain a certified surgical technologist credential.
• Employment as a surgical technologist in a surgical facility on or before July 1, 2013.
• Completed an accredited school of surgical technology; certification within 12 months of graduation.
• BLS certification.
