Job summary

WVU Medicine in Martinsburg, WV seeks a Surgical Technologist to assist with nursing care and surgical services under supervision. You will prepare the operating room, pass instruments, maintain sterile fields, and support the team during procedures.

Qualifications include NBSTSA/NCCT/AAHA certification and BLS within 30 days of hire; preferred one year of scrub experience. Typical shift is days, with call rotation as needed.

Qualifications

• Certified Surgical Technologist with NBSTSA/NCCT/AAHA.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days of hire.

Responsibilities

• Utilizes quality aseptic technique in sterile and non-sterile roles in the OR.
• Assists circulating RN in maintaining a sterile field and monitoring technique.
• Performs sponge, instrument, and needle counts with the circulating RN.
• Gowns and gloving surgeons and positions equipment and instruments.
• Passes sterile instruments to the surgical team during procedures.
• Operates specialty equipment after training.
• Assists with transportation and positioning of patients.
• Prepares supplies and equipment for procedures; performs equipment checks.
• Assists with sterilization and maintenance of supplies and equipment.
• Monitors inventory, orders, and restocks supplies, instruments, and equipment.
• Removes out-of-date items and discards or reprocesses as needed.
• Assists with general cleaning and clerical duties including data gathering.
• Prepares and updates preference cards and instrument tray lists.
• Supports accurate recording of patient charges.

Assists with nursing care and the surgical services under the direct supervision of the registered nurse and physician/surgeon.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Current Surgical Technologist Certification through one of the following boards: National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) National Center for Competencies Testing (NCCT) American Allied Health Association (AAHA)
2. Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.

Preferred Qualifications

1. One (1) year of prior scrub experience.

Core Duties and Responsibilities

1. Utilizes quality aseptic technique when working in an unsterile or sterile role in the OR.
2. Assists the circulating RN in monitoring technique of all persons in the OR to maintain a sterile field.
3. Performs sponge, instrument, and needle counts with the circulating RN following established guidelines.
4. Assists with gowning and gloving surgeons and positioning equipment and instruments.
5. Passes sterile instruments to the surgical team during a surgical procedure.
6. Operates specialty equipment after receiving specific training.
7. Assists with transportation and positioning of the patients.
8. Prepares supplies and equipment for surgical procedure following preference cards. Performs equipment checks as assigned.
9. Assists with sterilization and maintenance of sterile and non-sterile supplies and equipment.
10. Monitors inventory; orders; and restocks supplies, instruments, and equipment.
11. Removes out-of-date items and discards or reprocesses following established guidelines.
12. Assists with the general cleaning duties of the department.
13. Assists with clerical work, and record keeping duties including the gathering of indicator data such as frequency of events.
14. Prepares and updates preference cards and instrument tray lists as directed.
15. Assists with the proper recording of patient charges.

Physical Requirements

1. Capable of prolonged periods of standing and walking.
2. Ability to lift up to 40-pounds and push/pull heavy loaded carts up to 200 lbs.
3. Possess visual, hearing, and oral acuity along with manual dexterity and technical ability.
4. Ability to wear lead for extended periods of time.

Working Environment

1. May be exposed to communicable diseases.

Skills and Abilities

1. Ability to follow strict sterile technique.
2. Ability to set up operating room with instruments and supplies for scheduled cases and pass to and from surgeon during procedures.
3. Knowledge of and adherence to strict aseptic and sterile techniques.
