Job summary

BMC Berkeley Medical Center in Martinsburg, WV seeks a Surgical Technologist to assist the surgical team under supervision in the OR. Responsibilities include aseptic technique, passing instruments, and supporting the RN and surgeon throughout procedures.

The role requires current certification (NBSTSA/NCCT/AAHA) and BLS within 30 days of hire, with duties spanning instrument preparation, sterile technique, and inventory management. Weekday day shift with 40-hour scheduled week.

Qualifications

• Current Surgical Technologist Certification through NBSTSA, NCCT or AAHA.
• Basic Life Support certification required within 30 days of hire.

Responsibilities

• Utilizes quality aseptic technique in sterile or unsterile roles in the OR.
• Assists circulating RN to maintain sterile field.
• Performs sponge, instrument, and needle counts with RN.
• Assists with gowning/gloving and positioning equipment.
• Passes sterile instruments to the surgical team.
• Operates specialty equipment after training.
• Assists with patient transport and positioning.
• Prepares supplies and equipment and performs equipment checks.
• Assists with sterilization and maintenance of supplies/equipment.
• Monitors inventory and restocks supplies and instruments.
• Removes out-of-date items and reprocesses as needed.
• Assists with department cleaning and clerical duties.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

• Current Surgical Technologist Certification through one of the following boards:
• National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)
• National Center for Competencies Testing (NCCT)
• American Allied Health Association (AAHA)
• Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• One (1) year of prior scrub experience.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Assists the circulating RN in monitoring technique of all persons in the OR to maintain a sterile field.
• Performs sponge, instrument, and needle counts with the circulating RN following established guidelines.
• Assists with gowning and gloving surgeons and positioning equipment and instruments.
• Passes sterile instruments to the surgical team during a surgical procedure.
• Operates specialty equipment after receiving specific training.
• Assists with transportation and positioning of the patients.
• Prepares supplies and equipment for surgical procedure following preference cards. Performs equipment checks as assigned.
• Assists with sterilization and maintenance of sterile and non-sterile supplies and equipment.
• Monitors inventory; orders; and restocks supplies, instruments, and equipment.
• Removes out-of-date items and discards or reprocesses following established guidelines.
• Assists with the general cleaning duties of the department.
• Assists with clerical work, and record keeping duties including the gathering of indicator data such as frequency of events.
• Prepares and updates preference cards and instrument tray lists as directed.
• Assists with the proper recording of patient charges.

• Capable of prolonged periods of standing and walking.
