Job summary

Mount Sinai Medical Center in South Florida seeks a Surgical Technician to support operating room teams with patient handling, sterile technique, and instrument preparation. You will sort, assemble, and pass instruments, ensuring safety and sterility throughout procedures.

Requirements include CPR and Surgical Technician Certification, a high school diploma, and graduation from an accredited program. 5–7 years of OR experience is preferred, with competency across multiple surgical specialties.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in positioning and transferring patients.
  • Prepare, maintain, and monitor sterile setup.
  • Dispose of linens, gloves, and sharps properly.
  • Transport instruments to decontamination area.
  • Check function of equipment and instruments before cases.
  • Report broken equipment to RN circulator.
  • Maintain sterile field until dressings are applied and/or x-rays are taken.
  • Identify and label medications on back table.
  • Ensure instrument trays are complete before/after a case.
  • Handle contaminated items per biohazard protocol.
  • Maintain neutral zone when passing sharps.
  • Adhere to PPE protocol and wear eye protection.
  • Maintain CPR status and surgical technician certification.
  • Assist with room turnover and disposal of debris.
  • Identify specimens to circulator.
  • Support patient safety and a safe environment.
  • Willing to precept and cross-train in other services

Job Description Summary: Position Responsibilities
  • Assists in positioning and transferring of patients.
  • Prepares, maintains, and monitor sterile set-up.
  • Dispose of linens, gloves, and sharps in appropriate containers.
  • Transports instruments in appropriate manner to decontamination area.
  • Prior to case, checks function of equipment and instruments.
  • Reports broken equipment/instruments to charge nurse of the service and the core desk.
  • Assures maintenance of sterile field until dressings are applied, x-rays are taken, and/or patient is out the room.
  • Points out break in sterile technique of self and/ or team members to the RN circulator immediately.
  • Handles contaminated items in appropriate manner by placing them in red bags or linen bin.
  • Replace equipment and supplies used intra-operatively insuring that they are in good working order.
  • Insures completeness of instruments trays before and after a case.
  • Removes all instruments from sterile drapes.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of proper care and handling of specialty instruments.
  • Establish and maintain a neutral zone when passing sharps on the sterile field to prevent exposure/injury to self and others.
  • Adheres to personal protective equipment protocol at all times.
  • Wear eye protection when scrubbed at the field.
  • Identifies and labels all medication on back table.
  • Inspects sterile packages, containers, and trays for integrity prior to placing on sterile field.
  • Checks case supplies according to surgeon's preference list.
  • Maintains current CPR status and surgical technician certification.
  • Assists surgical service assistants with room turnover by disposing of surgical debris in biohazard bags.
  • Identifies specimens verbally when passing them off to the circulator.
  • Facilitates and monitors patient safety by providing a safe environment.
  • Removes and put away unused supplies and sutures after each case.
  • Demonstrates competence and specialize in at least 1 major service, demonstrating competency, willingness and flexibility to work in other services as requested.
  • Demonstrates willingness to precept as needed.
Qualifications
  • License/Registration/Certification CPR required.
  • Surgical Technician Certification required.
  • Education HS Diploma.
  • Graduate from accredited program required.
  • Experience 5 - 7 yrs experience preferred.
  • Competent in General, Gynecological and Cardiovascular, Major Orthopedic and Neuro-Surgery
