Job summary

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, VA is hiring a Certified Surgical Assistant to support the surgical team and ensure patient safety throughout intraoperative, preoperative, and postoperative duties. The role includes equipment setup, retraction, suturing, and collaboration with the surgeon to optimize outcomes.

A CAHEP-accredited program graduate with Virginia Surgical Assistant license and BLS is required; prior experience is preferred.

Qualifications

• Graduate of CAAHEP accredited Surgical Assistant Program.
• Surgical Assistant license required.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification REQUIRED.
• Prior Surgical Assistant experience strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assist the surgeon with equipment setup, positioning, retraction, and visualization of the surgical site.
• Perform intraoperative duties including suturing, closure, and administration of medications as directed.
• Handle preoperative and postoperative duties to support comprehensive patient care.
• Use effective interdisciplinary communication to facilitate optimal patient outcomes.
