Job summary

Sentara Obici Hospital in Suffolk, VA, is hiring a Certified Surgical Assistant I for a full-time role. The position supports the surgical team with intraoperative tasks including equipment setup, retraction, suturing, and wound closure, and also handles pre/postoperative duties to enhance patient care.

The ideal candidate will have a TS diploma with CAAHEP Surgical Assistant training, Virginia licensure as a Surgical Assistant, and BLS certification.

Qualifications

• Trade school graduate with Surgical Assistant training (CAAHEP) is required.
• Virginia licensure as Surgical Assistant is required.
• Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA) or CSFA credentials preferred; BLS required.

Responsibilities

• Assist the surgeon with intraoperative tasks: equipment setup, retraction, suturing, and wound closure.
• Prepare and position for surgery and aid in visualization of the surgical site.
• Complete preoperative and postoperative duties to support patient care and team communication.
• Participate in departmental improvement efforts and ensure effective interdisciplinary communication.

Sentara Obici Hospital is hiring a Certified Surgical Assistant I in Suffolk, Virginia.This is a full-time position.

Sign on bonus up to $7,500 (new grad) - $15,000- Experienced (1 year) available for qualified candidates.

Hours: 7am-4pm Monday-Friday

The Certified Surgical Assistant anticipates the needs of the surgical team, the Surgical Assistant assists the surgeon with tasks such as selecting equipment, set up of various tables and positioning equipment, providing retraction for visualization of surgical site, cauterization of bleeding vessels, suturing and closure of incision, instillation of medications, application of surgical dressings, splints, and casts. In addition to intraoperative duties, the surgical assistant also performs preoperative and postoperative duties to better facilitate proper patient care. The surgical assistant uses effective interdisciplinary communication to facilitate optimal patient outcomes.

Education

• TS – Trade School Graduate CAAHEP – Surgical Assistant required

Certification/Licensure

• Licensed Surgical Assistant – Virginia required
• Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA) - Certifications - National Commission for the Certification of Surgical Assistants (NCCSA) OR
• Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) - Certifications - National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)
• Basic Life Support (BLS) - Certification - American Heart Association (AHA)required

Experience

• 1 year of Operating room experience preferred
• Demonstrates in depth clinical and technical skills in surgical fields
• Participate in departmental improvement efforts preferred
• Uses effective interdisciplinary communication to facilitate optimal patient outcomes required

We provide market-competitive compensation packages, inclusive of base pay, incentives, and benefits. The base pay range for full-time employment is $39.96 - $59.48 hourly.Additional compensation may be available for this role, such as shift differentials, standby/on-call pay, overtime, shift premiums, extra-shift incentives, or bonus opportunities. Compensation within the range may vary based on qualifications, experience, location, market conditions, and business needs.
