SteelCon Inc. in Houston, TX is seeking multiple full-time Certified Structural Welders to join our team. Work shifts from 7:00 am–4:00 pm or 5:30 pm–2:00 am, with overtime and some weekends as needed.

Qualifications

• AWS certification for welding; certified on 1-inch plate in flat position.
• Able to pass welding tests including fillet weld and shop drawings interpretation.
• Able to read cutting lists, shop orders and shop drawings.
• Able to perform general math calculations and readings.
• Commitment to safety procedures and quality expectations.

Responsibilities

• Plan, lay out, and fit metal components while maintaining alignment tolerances.
• Set, fit, and erect structural assemblies and modules within alignment tolerances.
• Locate and mark reference lines (center, buttock, and frame lines).
• Align parts using jacks, turnbuckles, clips, wedges, and mauls.
• Install structural foundations and items like doors, hatches, brackets, and clips.
• Tack weld panels, bulkhead, assemblies, and more.
• Roll, bend, flange, cut, and shape metal parts using ironworkers, presses, cranes.
• Follow blueprints and instructions with minimal supervision.
• Comply with safety procedures, quality expectations, and company policies.

WHAT YOU'LL DO AS OUR CERTIFIED STRUCTURAL WELDER:

• Work from 7:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday for the day shift, or 5:30 pm to 2:00 am for the Night shift. Overtime is available and some weekends as needed.
• Plan, lay out, and fit metal components while maintaining alignment tolerances
• Set, fit, and erect structural assemblies and modules within alignment tolerances
• Locate and mark reference lines (center, buttock, and frame lines)
• Properly align parts using jacks, turnbuckles, clips, wedges, and mauls
• Install structural foundations and items like doors, hatches, brackets, and clips
• Tack weld panels, bulkhead, assemblies, and more
• Safely roll, bend, flange, cut, and shape metal parts using machinery like ironworkers, presses, plate rolls, and press brakes
• Accurately follow blueprints and instructions with minimal supervision
• Comply with all safety procedures, quality expectations, and company policies

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR:

If you're interested in becoming our Certified Structural Welder, you'll need to be able to:

• Maintain American Welding Society certification on a 1-inch plate in flat position using the gas metal arc welding and flux‑cored arc welding processes
• Adequately operate a cutting torch
• Adjust the welder to ensure proper feed rate and temperature
• Properly operate forklifts, jib hoists, and overhead cranes
• Learn and use hand signals for crane operation
• Read, understand, and follow cutting lists, shop orders, and shop drawings
• Perform general math calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, etc.)
• Read, write, and follow semi‑complicated verbal and written instructions
• Communicate with managers and co‑workers
• Set priorities, meet goals, and work under periodic supervision
• Use a tape measure/ruler
• Follow safety policies and take accountability for your work
• Multitask

You will need to pass various welding tests, including:

• The fillet weld break test using the gas metal arc welding process
• A basic welding test that covers shop drawing interpretation, weld symbols, welding processes, weld process symbol interpretation/application, and a visual acuity test
• A fitting test that covers shop drawing interpretation, fractional number calculations, basic geometry, etc.
