Primary Function

Responsible for the decontamination, cleaning, processing, distribution, storage, and sterilization of surgical instrumentation in the Sterile Processing area. Interaction with surgeons, nurses, and the OR team is vital to ensure proper products are available at the time of surgery.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Decontaminate, clean, inspect, process, and assemble surgical instrumentation for the Operating Room, Sterile Processing area, and durable patient care equipment.
  2. Operate and maintain sterilizers, washer/decontaminators, endoscope reprocessors, and perform high-level disinfection, including testing sterilizers and maintaining records.
  3. Disinfect video scopes and auxiliary equipment using manual and automated techniques, and perform visual inspections and operational testing.
  4. Understand cleaning protocols, use appropriate cleaning agents, and ensure all instruments are clean, functional, and free of wear before assembly.
  5. Assemble instrument trays and equipment according to protocols, wrapping items appropriately.
  6. Perform and interpret challenge tests on sterilizers to ensure proper function.
  7. Check the OR schedule daily to prioritize surgical cases and collaborate with Supply Chain for organizing supplies.
  8. Comply with federal, state, and hospital regulations, including AAMI, OSHA, and infection control policies.
  9. Perform minor troubleshooting of equipment and determine when professional service is needed.
  10. Maintain and distribute sterile supplies and equipment throughout the hospital.
  11. Practice Universal Precautions and participate in process improvement initiatives.
  12. Perform other duties as assigned or needed.
Job Qualifications
  1. Minimum 6 months of Surgical Services experience preferred.
  2. HSPA CRCST certification required.
  3. High school diploma or equivalent required.
  4. Skills in inventory management, problem solving, communication, teamwork, and multitasking are essential.
  5. Proficient in computers and Microsoft Office.
