Selects appropriate materials and sterilization packaging for each instrument set, ensuring proper wrapping for aseptic technique. Other duties as assigned. Ensures sterility indicators and lot stickers are present on all instrument sets and packages. Operates complex sterilization equipment, selecting the correct method of sterilization based on manufacturer instructions. Reviews and signs all sterilizer recording charts to verify proper sterilization parameters before releasing items for clinical use. Monitors sterilizer printouts, maintains records, and documents all requirements in appropriate log books or computer systems. Properly identifies and segregates reusable items for decontamination, disinfection, and sterilization, selecting appropriate cleaning methods based on manufacturer instructions. Disassembles and inspects items for damage or missing components, ensuring safe operation of all equipment in the decontamination area. Accurately assembles instruments, complex instrument sets, and other surgical items, recording information in the computer tracking system or paper instrument count sheet. Utilizes the recall process for sterilization failures and notifies supervisors or managers of positive results. Communicates effectively with all hospital departments and within the department, using the chain of command to resolve issues. Participates in training new employees, attending in‑services and department meetings to maintain knowledge base. Rotates assignments among various areas within the department, including decontamination, surgical tray assembly, sterilization processes, and equipment management.
