Job summary

AdventHealth in Florida is seeking a Sterile Processing Technician to support surgical services across multiple campuses. The role includes selecting materials, operating sterilization equipment, and maintaining accurate records to ensure aseptic readiness.

  • 1+ related experience preferred.
  • CRCST or CSPDT certification required (or equivalent).
  • BLS certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Selects appropriate materials and sterilization packaging for each instrument set, ensuring proper wrapping for aseptic technique.
  • Operates sterilization equipment and chooses methods per manufacturer instructions.
  • Reviews and signs sterilizer charts to verify proper parameters before releasing items for clinical use.
  • Maintains sterilization records and log books or computer systems.
  • Identifies and segregates reusable items for decontamination and sterilization per guidelines.
  • Assembles instruments and sets, records information, and uses recall processes for sterilization issues.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Selects appropriate materials and sterilization packaging for each instrument set, ensuring proper wrapping for aseptic technique.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Ensures sterility indicators and lot stickers are present on all instrument sets and packages. Operates complex sterilization equipment, selecting the correct method of sterilization based on manufacturer instructions.
  • Reviews and signs all sterilizer recording charts to verify proper sterilization parameters before releasing items for clinical use.
  • Monitors sterilizer printouts, maintains records, and documents all requirements in appropriate log books or computer systems.
  • Properly identifies and segregates reusable items for decontamination, disinfection, and sterilization, selecting appropriate cleaning methods based on manufacturer instructions.
  • Disassembles and inspects items for damage or missing components, ensuring safe operation of all equipment in the decontamination area.
  • Accurately assembles instruments, complex instrument sets, and other surgical items, recording information in the computer tracking system or paper instrument count sheet. Utilizes the recall process for sterilization failures and notifies supervisors or managers of positive results.
  • Communicates effectively with all hospital departments and within the department, using the chain of command to resolve issues.
  • Participates in training new employees, attending in-services and department meetings to maintain knowledge base.
  • Rotates assignments among various areas within the department, including decontamination, surgical tray assembly, sterilization processes, and equipment management.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to communicate by reading, writing legibly, speaking and comprehending English effectively in order to carry out job requirements. [Required]

  • Understanding of the principles of microbiology, aseptic principles and techniques, and infection control as they apply to sterile supply operation. [Required]
  • Basic knowledge of prevention of cross contamination and the critical nature of nosocomial infections. [Required]
  • Knowledge of the use, operation, maintenance, assembly, disassembly and cleaning requirements of the full range of instruments and equipment. [Required]
  • Ability and experience with computer systems [Preferred]
Education:
  • High School Grad or Equiv [Required]
  • Technical/Vocational School [Preferred]
Field of Study:
  • in healthcare sterile processing
Work Experience:
  • 1+ related experience [Preferred]
Licenses and Certifications:
  • Certified Registered Central Service Tech (CRCST)[Required] OR
  • Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT)[Required]
  • Basic Life Support - CPR Cert (BLS) [Preferred]
