Job summary

Medical University of South Carolina is seeking a Sterile Processing Technician to support procedures across our healthcare enterprise in Orangeburg. This role processes instruments, maintains inventory, and prepares case carts for decontamination and sterilization.

You will operate washers and sterilizers, inspect instruments for cleanliness and function, and assist OR teams to obtain necessary instruments promptly. Education and CRCST/CBSPD certification preferred; hospital experience required.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required with healthcare sterile processing exposure.
  • CRCST or CBSPD certification preferred or required per level.
  • Experience in a hospital or surgical setting is advantageous.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain adequate instrument and supply inventory for theatre and other units.
  • Decontaminate and clean instrumentation following established standards.
  • Prepare case carts and load washers/sterilizers as prescribed.
  • Operate washers, ultrasonic cleaners and monitor sterilizer performance.
  • Inspect instruments for cleanliness and functionality and ensure proper packaging.

Job Description Sterile Processing Technicians ensure procedural equipment consistently meets the highest quality and safety standards, and is ready for use by all areas across the healthcare enterprise. This position receives and processes incoming supplies and equipment including performing cleaning and sterilizing duties, and is an integral part of the daily operation of all units.

Duties include:
  • Maintain adequate inventory for assembly of instruments and equipment
  • Perform and participate in the decontamination and cleaning of all instrumentation received, which include but are not limited to instrumentation and equipment received from all units according to established standards and procedures
  • Prepare case carts and trays for decontamination and load them into washer and/or sterilizer as prescribed procedure
  • Perform the operation of the index washers, cart washers, ultrasonic cleaners as well as manually cleaning instruments and equipment as prescribed by established standards and procedures
  • Inspects all instruments for cleanliness, proper function, and breakage by viewing the instruments before assembly
  • Uses appropriate container, wrap or pouch according to the size of the instrument or equipment
  • Sterilizes instruments and surgical trays by following prescribed policies and procedures
  • Know how to run tests on all sterilizers, monitor and document that all parameters have been met
  • Use chemicals in the appropriate fashion taking into consideration the intended use of chemical as well as chemical s function: knowledge of appropriate PPE is also necessary
  • Participates in expediting the OR schedule by assisting the other members of the OR Team in obtaining the instruments/equipment necessary for the procedure in a timely manner
  • Assembles and distributes case carts accurately and in a timely manner
  • Ability to travel between sites as needed, based on departmental needs
Additional Job Description
  • Sterile Processing Tech I: High School Diploma or GED, and certification through CRCST - HSPA (Healthcare Sterile Processing Association) or CBSPD (Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution). Minimum of six (6) months of sterile processing experience, preferably in a hospital or surgical setting.
  • Sterile Processing Tech II: Minimum of one (1) year of sterile processing experience, preferably in a hospital or surgical setting. Successful completion of the department’s internal written and practical exam, as well as meeting required performance and productivity standards, is required to attain and maintain Sterile Processing II status.
  • Sterile Processing Tech III: Minimum of two (2) years of sterile processing experience, preferably in a hospital or surgical setting. Successful completion of the department’s internal written and practical exam, as well as meeting required performance and productivity standards, is required to attain and maintain Sterile Processing III status.
