Job summary

AdventHealth Tampa is seeking a Sterile Processing Technician to support sterile supply operations in a fast-paced hospital setting.

The role involves aseptic wrapping, sterilization, instrument assembly, and documentation in computer systems. You will rotate through decontamination, tray assembly, and sterilization areas, ensuring patient safety and compliance with stringent standards.

Qualifications

• Proficient in medical terminology and aseptic techniques.
• Understanding of infection control principles as they apply to sterile processing.
• Experience with sterilization equipment and documentation systems.

Responsibilities

• Selects appropriate materials and packaging for instrument sets.
• Ensures sterility indicators and lot stickers are present.
• Operates sterilization equipment and selects correct method per instructions.
• Reviews sterilizer charts and verifies parameters before release.
• Monitors printouts, maintains records, and documents requirements.
• Identifies, segregates, and decontaminates reusable items as directed.
• Disassembles and inspects instruments for damage or missing parts.
• Assembles instrument sets and records information in tracking systems.
• Uses recall process for sterilization failures and notifies supervisors.
• Communicates effectively with departments and within the unit.
• Participates in training and department meetings to maintain knowledge.
• Rotates assignments across decontamination, tray assembly, sterilization, and equipment management.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Description:

• Selects appropriate materials and sterilization packaging for each instrument set, ensuring proper wrapping for aseptic technique.
• Ensures sterility indicators and lot stickers are present on all instrument sets and packages.
• Operates complex sterilization equipment, selecting the correct method of sterilization based on manufacturer instructions.
• Reviews and signs all sterilizer recording charts to verify proper sterilization parameters before releasing items for clinical use.
• Monitors sterilizer printouts, maintains records, and documents all requirements in appropriate log books or computer systems.
• Properly identifies and segregates reusable items for decontamination, disinfection, and sterilization, selecting appropriate cleaning methods based on manufacturer instructions.
• Disassembles and inspects items for damage or missing components, ensuring safe operation of all equipment in the decontamination area.
• Accurately assembles instruments, complex instrument sets, and other surgical items, recording information in the computer tracking system or paper instrument count sheet.
• Utilizes the recall process for sterilization failures and notifies supervisors or managers of positive results.
• Communicates effectively with all hospital departments and within the department, using the chain of command to resolve issues.
• Participates in training new employees, attending in-services and department meetings to maintain knowledge base.
• Rotates assignments among various areas within the department, including decontamination, surgical tray assembly, sterilization processes, and equipment management.
• Other duties as assigned.

• Ability and experience with computer systems [Preferred]

Education:

• High School Grad or Equiv [Required]
• Technical/Vocational School [Preferred]

Field of Study:

• in healthcare sterile processing

Work Experience:

• 1+ related experience [Preferred]
