Primary Function: Responsible for the decontamination, cleaning, processing, distribution, storage, and sterilization of surgical instrumentation in the Sterile Processing area. Interaction with surgeons, nurses, and the OR team is vital to ensure proper products are available at the time of surgery.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Decontaminate, clean, inspect, process, and assemble surgical instrumentation for the Operating Room, Sterile Processing area, and durable patient care equipment.
  2. Operate and be responsible for sterilizers, washer/decontaminators, automatic endoscope reprocessors, and perform high-level disinfection. Test sterilizers and maintain accurate records.
  3. Disinfect video scopes and auxiliary equipment using manual washing techniques and automated systems. Conduct visual inspections and operational testing of video scopes and auxiliary equipment.
  4. Understand cleaning protocols for all instruments used in the Operating Room. Use cleaning agents and detergents appropriately.
  5. Visually inspect all instruments for cleanliness, proper function, and wear before assembly.
  6. Assemble instrument trays and equipment according to assembly count sheets. Wrap or pouch items using appropriate techniques.
  7. Perform and interpret challenge tests on sterilizers to ensure proper function.
  8. Check the OR schedule daily to determine surgical cases and their priority.
  9. Collaborate with Supply Chain to organize supplies for each surgical case, including last-minute additions.
  10. Comply with federal and state regulations, and follow AAMI, OSHA, and infection control policies.
  11. Perform minor troubleshooting of equipment and determine when professional service is needed.
  12. Maintain and distribute sterile supplies, crash carts, and other items needed hospital-wide.
  13. Practice Universal Precautions.
  14. Participate in and lead process improvement initiatives.
  15. Perform other duties as assigned and provide additional support as needed.

Job Qualifications

  • 6 months of Surgical Services experience preferred.
  • Certified Registered Central Sterile Technician (CRCST) certification required.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Skills in inventory management, problem-solving, communication, teamwork, and project management required.
  • Proficient in computers and Microsoft Office.
