Job summary

AdventHealth in Overland Park, KS is seeking a Sterile Processing Technician to support aseptic packaging and instrument preparation. You will select materials, verify sterility indicators, and operate complex sterilization equipment to ensure safe clinical use.

You will monitor charts and records, assemble instrument sets, participate in training, and rotate through decontamination, tray assembly, sterilization, and equipment management to maintain efficient sterile services.

Qualifications

  • High School Grad or Equiv [Required]
  • Technical/Vocational School [Preferred]
  • Medical terminology [Required]
  • Infection control principles and aseptic techniques [Required]
  • Knowledge of sterilization equipment operation and maintenance [Required]

Responsibilities

  • Selects materials and packaging for instrument sets to ensure aseptic technique.
  • Ensures sterility indicators and lot stickers are on all sets and packages.
  • Operates sterilization equipment and selects correct method per manufacturer instructions.
  • Reviews and signs sterilizer charts to verify parameters before release.
  • Monitors printouts, maintains records in logs or systems.
  • Identifies and segregates reusable items for decontamination and sterilization.
  • Disassembles and inspects items for damage; ensures safe operation of equipment.
  • Assembles instruments and sets; records information in tracking systems.
  • Uses recall process for sterilization failures and notifies supervisors.
  • Communicates with hospital departments to resolve issues.
  • Rotates through decontamination, tray assembly, sterilization, and equipment management.

Job Description:
  • Selects appropriate materials and sterilization packaging for each instrument set, ensuring proper wrapping for aseptic technique.
  • Ensures sterility indicators and lot stickers are present on all instrument sets and packages.
  • Operates complex sterilization equipment, selecting the correct method of sterilization based on manufacturer instructions.
  • Reviews and signs all sterilizer recording charts to verify proper sterilization parameters before releasing items for clinical use.
  • Monitors sterilizer printouts, maintains records, and documents all requirements in appropriate log books or computer systems.
  • Properly identifies and segregates reusable items for decontamination, disinfection, and sterilization, selecting appropriate cleaning methods based on manufacturer instructions.
  • Disassembles and inspects items for damage or missing components, ensuring safe operation of all equipment in the decontamination area.
  • Accurately assembles instruments, complex instrument sets, and other surgical items, recording information in the computer tracking system or paper instrument count sheet.
  • Utilizes the recall process for sterilization failures and notifies supervisors or managers of positive results.
  • Communicates effectively with all hospital departments and within the department, using the chain of command to resolve issues.
  • Participates in training new employees, attending in-services and department meetings to maintain knowledge base.
  • Rotates assignments among various areas within the department, including decontamination, surgical tray assembly, sterilization processes, and equipment management.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to communicate by reading, writing legibly, speaking and comprehending English effectively in order to carry out job requirements. [Required]

  • Knowledge of the use, operation, maintenance, assembly, disassembly and cleaning requirements of the full range of instruments and equipment. [Required]
  • Ability and experience with computer systems [Preferred]
Education:
  • High School Grad or Equiv [Required]
  • Technical/Vocational School [Preferred]
Field of Study:
  • in healthcare sterile processing
Work Experience:
  • 1+ related experience [Preferred]
