Position Summary

TX-STAR is seeking certified Special Education Teachers to provide substitute teaching services for public, charter, and private schools throughout San Antonio and surrounding communities.

Certified Special Education Substitute Teachers provide instruction, classroom support, and student supervision when the regularly assigned Special Education Teacher is unavailable. Assignments may include single-day, multi-day, and long-term opportunities in inclusion, resource, self-contained, life-skills, and other special education settings.

Substitute Teachers may select assignments based on their availability, experience, preferred grade levels, program settings, and geographic preferences.

This opportunity is well suited for retired Special Education Teachers, former educators, and certified teachers seeking flexible school-based work while continuing to support students with disabilities and diverse learning needs.

Essential Responsibilities

• Follow lesson plans, instructional materials, Individualized Education Program (IEP) requirements, and directions provided by the regularly assigned teacher or school administration.
• Deliver instruction aligned with established curriculum, student learning objectives, and assigned accommodations or modifications.
• Provide individualized and small-group instruction to students receiving special education services.
• Support students in inclusion, resource, self-contained, life-skills, or other special education classroom settings as assigned.
• Implement documented accommodations, modifications, behavior supports, and instructional strategies as directed by the school.
• Maintain a safe, structured, respectful, and supportive learning environment.
• Manage student behavior in accordance with campus procedures, district policies, and applicable student behavior or intervention plans.
• Assist students with academic, social, functional, behavioral, and independent-living skills when appropriate to the assignment.
• Take attendance and complete required classroom, instructional, behavioral, or student documentation.
• Supervise students during classroom activities, transitions, lunch, recess, arrival, dismissal, and other assigned periods.
• Collaborate professionally with general education teachers, paraprofessionals, related-service providers, administrators, and other school personnel.
• Direct and work effectively with instructional aides or paraprofessionals assigned to the classroom when applicable.
• Use classroom technology, assistive technology, communication systems, and instructional resources as directed.
• Maintain student dignity, confidentiality, and privacy at all times.
• Communicate relevant information regarding student progress, behavior, classroom activities, or concerns to the regularly assigned teacher or designated administrator.
• Report student injuries, behavioral concerns, safety issues, or other significant incidents promptly.
• Follow all TX-STAR, campus, district, state, and federal policies and procedures.
• Represent TX-STAR professionally when interacting with students, families, teachers, administrators, and other school personnel.
• Perform other reasonable duties associated with the assigned Special Education classroom or program.

Minimum Qualifications

• Hold a current and valid Texas teaching certificate issued by the State Board for Educator Certification.
• Hold an appropriate Special Education certification or endorsement that satisfies the requirements of the participating school or district.
• Maintain educator certification in good standing and be eligible to work in a Texas public-school setting.
• Successfully complete all required fingerprinting, criminal-history reviews, and employment background checks.
• Meet the onboarding, orientation, training, and documentation requirements established by TX-STAR and the assigned school or district.
• Provide professional references, including at least one current or former supervisor.
• Communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
• Demonstrate the ability to follow lesson plans, provide differentiated instruction, manage student behavior, and maintain a safe learning environment.
• Demonstrate the ability to appropriately support students with disabilities and diverse academic, behavioral, communication, and functional needs.
• Possess basic computer skills and the ability to use common classroom technology.
• Have reliable transportation and the ability to report to assigned campuses on time.
• Demonstrate professionalism, dependability, flexibility, sound judgment, patience, and respect for student confidentiality.

The Substitute Teacher's certification area, grade level, and special education credentials must satisfy the participating school or district's requirements when applicable to a specific assignment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience teaching Special Education in a public, charter, or private school setting.
• Previous substitute teaching experience.
• Experience working in inclusion, resource, self-contained, life-skills, or structured special education classrooms.
• Experience implementing IEP accommodations, modifications, behavioral supports, or intervention plans.
• Experience working with students with a variety of disabilities and learning needs.
• Experience collaborating with paraprofessionals, related-service providers, and multidisciplinary school teams.
• Experience completing long-term substitute assignments.
• Additional certification in a high-need area such as bilingual education, English as a Second Language, mathematics, or science.
• Bilingual English/Spanish communication skills.
• Availability to accept multiple assignments each week.
