Job summary

Matheny is a special hospital for children and adults with medically complex developmental disabilities Mathenys mission is to provide exceptional care and an optimal quality of life for children and adults with special needs and medically complex developmental disabilities. Each patient has a primary nurse who coordinates all his/her care needs. Our nurses and nurse managers work closely with our paraprofessional care staff for on-going communication and teaching about each individual patient. We maintain close contact with families and acknowledge their importance as a valued member of the healthcare team.

Duties of this position include:
  • Provides care and oversight of care to students in accordance with physician’s orders, school policy and N.J. Administrative Code.
  • Facilitates the educational process by improving and protecting the health status of students.
  • Seeks to prevent illness through the early detection and correction of health problems.
  • Provide health assessments by:
    1. Obtains a health and developmental history.
    2. Screens and evaluates findings for deficits in vision, hearing, scoliosis, growth, etc.
    3. Observes the child for development and health patterns in making a nursing assessment and nursing diagnosis.
    4. Identifies health findings, which do not fall within the normal range for our student population.
  • Develops and implements a health plan.
    1. Interprets the health status of students to school personnel.
    2. Initiates referrals to parents, school personnel and community health resources for intervention, remediation, and follow through.
    3. Provides ongoing health information to students, parents, school personnel and health agencies.
  • Recommends and helps to implement modifications of school programs to meet students' health needs.
  • Maintains, evaluates, and interprets cumulative health data to accommodate individual needs of students
  • Participates as the health specialist on the student education evaluation team to develop the health individualized educational plan (I.E.P.)
  • Plans and implements school health management protocols for the student with chronic health problems, including the administration of medication.
  • Participates in home visits to assess the family’s needs as related to the student's health.
  • Develops procedures and provides for crises intervention for acute illness, injury and emotional disturbances.
  • Promotes and assists in the control of communicable diseases through preventive immunization programs, early detection, surveillance and reporting of contagious diseases.
  • Recommends provisions for a school environment conducive to learning.
  • Provides information on health.
  • Provides health information to assist students and families in making health-related decisions.
  • Participates in health education directly and indirectly for the improvement of health by teaching persons to become more assertive health consumers and to assume greater responsibility for their own health.
  • Provides information to adolescents concerning health problems in order to encourage responsible decision-making practices.
  • Serves as a resource person to the classroom teacher and administrator in health instruction and as a member of the health curriculum development committees.
  • Coordinates school and community health activities and serves as a liaison person between the home, school, and community.
  • Engages in research and evaluation of school health services to act as a change agent for school health programs and school nursing practices.
Administration:
  • Is responsible for maintaining and updating cumulative health records.
  • Helps develop/revise school health policies, procedures and standing orders.
  • Prepares the budget for school health supplies for review by principal.
  • Reviews, revises and implements emergency policies, including in-service health and safety programs for personnel.
  • Organizes, instructs, and supervises all RN’s passing medication or conducting treatment to school students during the school day, all 1-1 nurses, school health volunteers or assistants.
  • Reports regularly to the principal on school health activities.
  • Reports any and all health related issues to the principal as required by statute.
  • Implements the school medication policy and procedure.
Coordination:
  • Interprets school health services to school personnel.
  • Plans, implements, and supervises school health screening programs in accordance with state and district requirements and recommendations. Provides follow-up services when indicated.
  • Interprets appraisal findings, and helps students and parents accept responsibility for diagnosis and treatment.
  • Serves as a health liaison between school, home, and the community. Makes home visits as needed.
  • Encourages parents to maintain current immunization protection as required.
  • Participates in the health aspects of pre-registration in the school.
  • Helps school personnel recognize departures from appropriate behavior and growth patterns; helps students and staff adjust student programs when necessary to accommodate health needs of students.
  • Serves as a resource person to school personnel. Participates selectively in classroom instruction under the supervision of the teacher.
  • Reviews student immunization records annually for evidence of student compliance to immunization schedule pursuant to N.J.A.C.
  • Updates the School Health Services Plan with the School Physician annually.
  • Educates school staff on communicable disease, anaphylaxis, asthma and transmission-based precautions.
  • Evaluates students for communicable diseases and recommends exclusion as necessary in accordance with the N.J.A.C.
  • Attends traditional school based activities such as Back-to-School Night, Prom, Open House, and parent conferences. Provides oversight as per school based certificate and assignment. Accompanies students and staff on field trips as directed.
