Chester Community Charter School seeks a Certified School Nurse to ensure the health and safety of students. Responsibilities include administering medical care, supervising nursing staff, training teachers on health issues, and managing health-related policies and procedures. This role requires a valid nursing degree and state certification, alongside strong communication and organizational skills.
Established in 1998 with 97 students, CCCS has steadily increased to more than 4,000 students in grades K-8 across 12 state-of-the-art buildings on four campuses. Job Summary:
The Certified School Nurse specializes in providing care to students and staff members of schools. He/She takes care of students who require medical attention when they are injured or suffer from acute illness. His/Her tasks include treating of patients, referring them to other care providers, and interacting with parents of patients. Apart from designing and managing the health care system of the school, he/she helps the authorities cope with emergencies by training staff members to respond properly. He/she provides advice about improving the environment of the school. During periods when students are exposed to communicable diseases, he/she oversees immunization or exclusion measures. This position directs and supervises the nursing staff and provides leadership and management to those who report to the certified school nurse.
Essential Functions:
• Teaches classes on nutrition and health
• Assesses the status of a student’s immunization documentation and creating health plans for individuals with specific health needs
• Provides healthcare initiatives within the school
• Handles minor health issues that occur on a daily basis
• Dispenses students’ prescribed medications
• Provides information regarding the normal development of humans
• Provides regular dental, hearing, and vision screenings
• Supervises the nursing staff
• Develops evidence based Policies & Procedures to insure continuity of care
• Plans and organizes screening schedule for all buildings and screen students per Pennsylvania Department of Health School Guidelines
• Oversees and/or performs hearing screenings for assigned building(s) (Nursing Assistant not licensed to perform)
• Ensures the health of students by scheduling school physicals and finding a mobile dentist to provide dental care to our students in the state mandated grades
• Gathers medical data for student field trip approval
• Gathers and complete statistics on a monthly basis
• Arranges with Principals and provide teacher in-service for demonstration of epi-pen and inhaler use
• Orders supplies
• Provides ongoing over-site to health room personnel
• Enters SHARRS (Request for Reimbursement and Report of School Heath Services) report at end of year
• Performs other related duties as assigned
Minimum Requirements:
• Bachelor’s Degree or higher in a health related or nursing field (R.N. required)

• Pennsylvania Criminal Record Check Clearance
• Pennsylvania Child Abuse Clearance
• FBI Criminal Background Clearance
Certificates/Licenses:
• Pennsylvania Certification - Education Specialist 1 (K-12) Certification in School Nurse
Demonstrated Knowledge of:
• CPR/AED requirements and administration
• Child Abuse Laws
• Pennsylvania School Code
• Pennsylvania Department of Health and Regulations
• Pennsylvania Division of School Health Guidelines
Demonstrated Ability to:
• Perform and/or oversee mandated screenings and completes referrals and follow-up where applicable
• Manage and control acute chronic disease
• Carry out policies and procedures for the control of communicable diseases, in collaboration with the Pennsylvania Department of Health
• Provide first aide for illness or injury to students and document nursing assessment, diagnosis and treatment
• Inform teachers of health conditions of pupils which may affect behavior, appearance or scholastic performance
• Identify high risk children to needed services, including students presenting with signs of child abuse
• Plan for first aid services and instruct personnel responsible for giving first aid
• Promote good safety practices, both within and outside of school buildings (May serve as a member of Safe Schools Committee)
