Primary Purpose
Responsible for assisting the physician and/or Advanced Care Practitioner (ACP) with patient care, patient intake during office visits, documentation, vaccine and medication administration, clerical, environmental, and organizational tasks. Assists with appointment scheduling and maintaining medical records.
Major Responsibilities
- Provide care for newborn, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and/or geriatric patients, as relevant to the office's specialty.
- Participate in pre-visit planning with the provider and care team.
- Assist with patient intake and rooming procedures.
- Administer medications, including injections, as appropriate.
- Check vital signs, height, and weight.
- Assist with reviewing and updating medication history.
- Support health maintenance requirements.
- Perform Point of Care Testing (POCT) per standing or provider orders.
- Follow standard precautions and comply with all relevant policies and regulations, including OSHA, CLIA, TJC, and other applicable standards.
- Report patient conditions and reactions to the provider following procedures or treatments.
- Assist with patient inquiries regarding prescriptions, appointments, and referrals.
- Document care electronically as directed by the provider.
- Perform waived laboratory tests per CLIA standards, including quality control and maintenance of in-office labs.
- Perform venipuncture and assist with specimen collection for laboratory testing, including completing requisitions and preparing specimens for pickup.
- Monitor inventory, including medications, narcotics, and emergency supplies.
- Track and log laboratory and diagnostic test results, ensuring provider review.
Minimum Job Requirements
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS certification required and must be maintained.
Must possess one of the following:
- Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program.
- Intermediate EMT or Paramedic Program with 3 years of clinical experience.
- Structured military training with clinical components as per DD214.
- Graduate of an accredited School of Professional Nursing.
- 3 years of on-the-job training with successful completion of CHS Medical Group competency assessment.
Certification / License
Recognized/certified as a CMA or RMA by one of the following organizations:
- American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)
- National Healthcareer Association (NHA)
- National Healthcare Worker’s Association (NHCWA)
- National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)
- American Registry of Medical Assistants (ARMA)
- American Medical Technologists (AMT)
- National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP)
- National Registry of Medical Assistants (NRMA)
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Requires walking, standing, sitting, lifting, reaching, bending, stooping, pushing, and pulling. Must be able to lift up to 35 pounds. Possible exposure to communicable diseases. Must speak, read, and write fluent English. Good visual, auditory, olfactory, and tactile senses. Manual dexterity required.
Preferred Job Requirements
National Certification from a recognized Medical Association.
