Job summary

Kempsville Center for Behavioral Health is seeking a Certified Recreational Therapist to plan and lead therapeutic recreation activities for children and teens in residential and hospital settings. You will design groups that meet treatment goals and document progress under supervision.

The role requires an undergraduate degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Art Therapy or Music Therapy and CTRS/licensure, plus experience with youth in clinical settings. Evening and weekend shifts may be required.

Qualifications

• Undergraduate degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Art Therapy or Music Therapy and CTRS/licensure required.
• Experience working with children/adolescents in residential/psychiatric settings preferred.
• Residential treatment or psychiatric experience preferred.
• Must be able to operate 15-passenger vans and hold a valid driver’s license.
• Evening, weekend and holiday schedule; willingness to work flexible hours.
• Supervision provided by Director of Education/Designee; may require physical exertion.

Responsibilities

• Plan goal-oriented therapeutic recreation activities including community engagement and groups aligned with treatment goals.
• Lead hands-on facilitation for groups and documentation.
• Assess motor skills, cognition, and social functioning of patients and communicate findings to the therapeutic team.
• Demonstrate time management, problem-solving, and appropriate social skills including setting boundaries.
• Communicate limits and boundaries effectively to patients and staff.
• Adhere to therapeutic/professional boundaries and seek supervision when needed.
