Job Summary

The Certified Phlebotomy Technician is responsible for performing phlebotomy, specimen processing, micro plating, and assisting the Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) in the laboratory. This role requires professional application of laboratory principles, theories, and techniques of phlebotomy and specimen processing. The position reports to the lead laboratory assistant, laboratory manager/supervisor, and/or the administrative director of Laboratory services. The incumbent actively contributes to department operations and communication, behaving in a manner consistent with the mission, vision, and values of Pipeline Health, and upholding AIDET standards in patient communication.

Essential Functions
  • Follow hospital policies and procedures and document reviews.
  • Demonstrate ability to draw blood from all age groups, following proper procedures and antiseptic techniques.
  • Troubleshoot issues, document specimen rejection, prepare send-out specimens, and perform billing procedures.
  • Orient and train new staff.
  • Explain collection procedures to patients.
  • Assist CLS in the lab with centrifuging, organizing specimens, preparing instruments, making smears, plating micro, maintaining equipment, and inventory management.
  • Communicate clearly, concisely, and professionally with coworkers and patients, utilizing AIDET principles and whiteboards for patient communication.
  • Collaborate across disciplines to coordinate patient care, including transfers, discharges, referrals, and psychosocial support.
  • Perform tasks with a sense of urgency.
  • Maintain department organization by keeping files and supplies orderly.
  • Report equipment or environmental issues for repair.
  • Abide by HIPAA regulations.
  • Use SBAR communication when handing over shifts, communicating with physicians, or reporting to ancillary staff.
  • Speak up and escalate safety concerns when necessary.
  • Complete monthly training sessions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Experience
  • Minimum of one (1) year of phlebotomy experience in an accredited hospital laboratory.
  • Experience with laboratory instrumentation is preferred.
  • Strong critical thinking, communication, organizational, and computer skills.
  • Ability to learn quickly, work independently, prioritize patient needs, and collaborate effectively.
