In addition to performing advanced technical duties—including sterile compounding and handling hazardous substances—this position serves as a subject matter expert and team lead, guiding Pharmacy Technicians and resolving escalated issues. The role requires flexibility across multiple pharmacy areas to maintain broad competency.

The Lead Pharmacy Technician plays a critical role in hospital pharmacy operations, supporting the preparation and distribution of medications across inpatient, outpatient, emergency, and surgical units. In addition to performing advanced technical duties—including sterile compounding and handling hazardous substances—this position serves as a subject matter expert and team lead, guiding Pharmacy Technicians and resolving escalated issues. The role requires flexibility across multiple pharmacy areas to maintain broad competency.
Job Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED
- Active Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) credential
- Accepted certifications: PTCB or ExCPT (National Healthcareer Association)
- Active registration with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy as a Certified Pharmacy Technician
- Must be able to compound sterile products and maintain a sterile environment
- Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills
- Minimum 1 year of experience as a Pharmacy Technician II
- Must become chemotherapy-trained upon promotion
Key Responsibilities
- Perform and oversee unit dose dispensing, non-sterile and sterile compounding, and IV medication preparation
- Handle hazardous medications in compliance with safety protocols
- Maintain inventory, rotate stock, and manage controlled substances (CII–CV) using systems like Pyxis and CII Safe
- Operate and maintain pharmacy automation systems; troubleshoot and report issues
- Access and update patient records, process Rx messages, and print labels in the EHR
- Lead and mentor Pharmacy Technicians; resolve workflow challenges and escalate issues as needed
- Collaborate with supervisors on process improvements and team development
- Participate in hiring, training, performance evaluations, and scheduling (Kronos)
- Ensure compliance with pharmacy policies, standards of work, and regulatory requirements
- Identify and address patient safety concerns related to medication use
Additional Information
- Must be willing and able to compound hazardous medications as needed
- Exposure to hazardous and toxic substances is expected
- Leadership responsibilities include training, mentoring, and performance feedback for Technician I–IV levels
