Job Summary

The Advanced Pharmacy Technician performs expert-level pharmacy technician responsibilities across core and advanced pharmacy operations while supporting patient-centered care, medication safety, regulatory compliance, and operational excellence. This position serves as a subject matter expert in pharmacy practice areas, including sterile and hazardous compounding, controlled substance management, inventory operations, automation systems, and quality improvement initiatives. The Advanced Pharmacy Technician collaborates with pharmacists, healthcare teams, and leadership to optimize pharmacy services, lead training and development activities, support compliance efforts, and advance departmental goals through innovation, mentorship, and continuous improvement.

Essential Functions
  • Performs advanced pharmacy technician functions across centralized, decentralized, distributive, automation, inventory, sterile compounding, and hazardous medication workflows.
  • Provides expertise in medication preparation, dispensing, sterile compounding, hazardous drug handling, controlled substance management, and pharmacy operational support.
  • Leads enterprise-level inventory management activities, including procurement processes, formulary compliance, inventory accuracy, medication shortage management, and supply chain optimization.
  • Oversees controlled substance inventory, documentation, diversion prevention initiatives, and compliance with DEA regulations and organizational policies.
  • Conducts inventory, compliance, and operational audits to support medication security, cost containment, and process improvement efforts.
  • Leads medication safety initiatives focused on error prevention, risk reduction, quality improvement, and staff education.
  • Participates in root cause analysis activities and develops corrective action plans to improve patient and medication safety outcomes.
  • Serves as a medication safety resource and advisor for pharmacy leadership and team members.
  • Oversees hazardous medication handling programs, environmental monitoring activities, and spill response processes.
  • Supports compliance with USP <795>, USP <797>, USP <800>, OSHA, DEA, and other applicable regulatory standards.
  • Leads pharmacy compliance initiatives, audit preparation activities, policy development, and accreditation readiness efforts.
  • Monitors regulatory changes and supports implementation of required operational and procedural updates.
  • Serves as a liaison between pharmacy, clinical, operational, and administrative departments to support organizational goals and patient care initiatives.
  • Collaborates with pharmacists and healthcare teams to resolve medication-related issues and ensure continuity of pharmacy services.
  • Provides leadership for technician onboarding, training, competency validation, career development, and workforce engagement activities.
  • Mentors pharmacy technicians, students, and team members while supporting recruitment, retention, and succession planning efforts.
  • Precepts pharmacy technician students and assists with pharmacy residency and educational programs as assigned.
  • Participates in performance evaluations, competency assessments, and coaching activities as assigned.
  • Leads strategic quality improvement, operational excellence, education, and practice advancement projects.
  • Provides coverage and expertise in multiple advanced pharmacy practice areas, including hazardous compounding, controlled substance management, pharmacy purchasing and inventory management, medication history programs, decentralized pharmacy services, automation management, environmental monitoring, and other specialty functions.
  • Oversees preparation and distribution of high-risk medications, sterile products, chemotherapy agents, and investigational medications while ensuring compliance with all applicable standards.
  • Leads optimization, implementation, maintenance, and enhancement of pharmacy automation systems, automated dispensing cabinets, and pharmacy software solutions.
  • Collaborates with pharmacy informatics and information technology teams to improve technology performance, workflow efficiency, and user experience.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Advanced knowledge of hospital pharmacy operations, medication distribution systems, and pharmacy technician practice standards.
  • Knowledge of sterile compounding, hazardous drug handling, and controlled substance management requirements.
  • Knowledge of USP <795>, USP <797>, USP <800>, DEA, OSHA, Joint Commission, and other applicable regulatory standards.
  • Knowledge of medication safety principles, quality improvement methodologies, and pharmacy compliance requirements.
  • Ability to lead operational initiatives, quality improvement projects, and workflow optimization efforts.
  • Ability to train, mentor, coach, and develop pharmacy technicians and learners.
  • Strong understanding of pharmacy automation systems, automated dispensing cabinets, inventory management systems, and pharmacy technology.
  • Ability to perform advanced auditing, inventory analysis, and operational assessments.
  • Strong critical thinking, decision-making, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with pharmacists, providers, leadership, and interdisciplinary healthcare teams.
  • Knowledge of purchasing, inventory control, formulary management, and medication shortage mitigation strategies.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and compliance with organizational policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrated leadership, organizational, and project management skills.
  • Commitment to continuous professional development and advancement of pharmacy practice.
Education
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate Degree preferred.
  • Technical or Vocational School training preferred.
Field of Study
  • Completion of a Pharmacy Technician training program preferred.
Work Experience
  • Two years of contemporary hospital pharmacy experience required.
  • Experience in advanced pharmacy operations, sterile compounding, hazardous drug handling, automation systems, inventory management, compliance activities, or technician leadership preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Registered Pharmacy Technician (RPhT) required.
  • National Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT) through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or National Healthcareer Association (NHA) required.
Additional Information
  • National pharmacy technician certification must be maintained throughout employment in accordance with organizational policies and applicable regulatory requirements.
