Performs various technical functions and activities relating to preparing, packaging, drug distribution, IV admixtures, distribution and record-keeping of pharmaceuticals and controlled substances. Performs duties on an as-needed basis as defined by the PRN guidelines.
What you will do
- Provides assistance and performs technical pharmacy services under supervision of licensed pharmacist and in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- Prepares unit dose medications and fills unit dose carts.
- Calculates, weighs and compounds ingredients to prepare non-sterile pharmaceutical products.
- Prepares, labels and documents IV products.
- Uses aseptic techniques and the laminar flow hood in preparing and labeling syringes, IV admixtures, and sterile products.
- Packages and appropriately labels all dosage forms used in the pharmacy by using appropriate pharmacy packaging, counting and labeling equipment.
- Documents medication orders.
- Delivers patient medication orders to units.
- Maintains required prescription/medication and other department records.
- Demonstrates knowledge and skills to provide technical services and maintain clinical competency as required to effectively and efficiently provide patient care and clinical services.
- Prepares and fills prescriptions and medication orders, maintaining appropriate legal and departmental records; computes records, patient charges and credits patients for unused drugs.
- Reads physician’s prescribed medication orders specifying name, quantity, strength, frequency and method of administration of drugs and other pharmaceutical products.
- Selects the medication from pre-packaged, or unit dose stock and counts the prescribed quantity.
- Places the drug in appropriate patient medication drawer/bin.
- Presents filled order to the Pharmacist for review.
- Post charges into computer system from the medication administration record and other charge documents.
- Adjusts patient profile accordingly to reflect physician’s desire to continue or discontinue said drug.
- Operates computerized data systems.
- Interprets and performs order entry functions in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
- Utilizes computer and related equipment to enter and retrieve information.
- Receives, transports and stores necessary pharmacy-related items to and from pharmacy areas as well as to and from other hospital pharmacies and nursing units as assigned.
- Assists in inventory control including ordering stock rotation and return of outdated medications.
- Maintains perpetual inventory of pharmaceuticals and supplies in the dispensing areas assigned and stores the drugs appropriately.
- Replenish medicine carts for nursing units; restocks nursing units and ancillary departments; checks for outdated, deteriorated or contaminated drugs, overstock, and proper storage products.
- Reviews drug usage records to examine for unusual or high usage.
- Orders supplies and stocks under proper conditions.
- Maintains a safe and orderly arrangement of pharmaceuticals and supplies in the pharmacy and nursing areas and maintains a clean and neat work area.
- Utilizes supplies in a cost-effective manner.
- Cleans and maintains all pharmacy related equipment.
- Reports malfunction of equipment to supervisor.
- Maintains confidentiality in matters relating to patient/family, department and hospital information. Adheres to established department and organization policies (i.e. HIPAA, Confidentiality, and Compliance Policies).
- Works effectively and serves as intermediary between patient care units and pharmacy; answers calls and accepts requests; collects and delivers medication orders, UD cassettes and any other items as assigned.
- Interacts and communicates in a customer responsive and courteous manner, in compliance with iRESPECT standards and promoting patient/customer satisfaction.
- Works collaboratively with medical/hospital staff and patients to coordinate and implement activities.
- Maintains a clean, orderly, safe environment to minimize risk to patients and staff by complying with all safety/risk management policies and procedures.
- Adheres to established policies, compliance/quality improvement, and safety, environment and infection control standards.
- Completes required continuous training and education, including department specific requirements.
- Responds to problems/opportunities to improve work environment and participates in unit based performance improvement activities.
- Provides support to pharmacy and other ancillary personnel to provide clinical assistance as needed.
- Assists in the orientation and supervision of students when they provide patient care, treatment and services as part of their training.
- Provides coverage for relief and absences. Demonstrates flexibility to work night, weekend and holiday to provide continuous pharmacy coverage as required.
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as required.
- Checks patient identification and issues filled medication to outpatients.
- Provides assistance to customers/patient in the purchase of over-the-counter items.
- Performs cashier functions and collects payment from Medplex patients.
- Responds to customer/patient inquiries.
Qualifications
- Successful completion of Pharmacy Technician program or equivalent education Required.
- Current documentation as Certified Pharmacy Technician and license to work in state of TN as Pharmacy Technician Required.
- At least 1 year experience in patient care as obtained through completion of a Pharmacy Technician program or one (1) year previous experience as Pharmacy Technician Required.
