Job Title: Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS)

Job Summary:

The Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS) is responsible for assisting beneficiaries in achieving their developmental, rehabilitative, and recovery goals by providing support rooted in lived experience. The CPSS must possess excellent communication skills, be knowledgeable about necessary supports, and exhibit strong interpersonal skills. As an active participant in the beneficiary's interdisciplinary team, the CPSS will provide constructive feedback regarding the delivery of services. The CPSS shall only provide services to beneficiaries with similar lived experiences and must work within the scope of their certification and core competencies.

Day-To-Day Responsibilities:

• Availability: CPSS must be available during times that meet the needs of the beneficiary, which may include evenings, weekends, or both.

• Lived Experience: CPSS shall only provide services to a beneficiary with similar lived experiences.

• Knowledge & Skills:

• Knowledge of peer support principles, values, and ethics.

• Ability to share lived experience to support, encourage, and enhance a beneficiary's treatment and recovery.

• Possess recovery-oriented skills and knowledge to provide peer support services.

• Ability to collaborate with the program QP to assess strengths and areas of growth, and develop a supervision plan.

• Collaboration & Support:

• Collaborate with beneficiaries to identify barriers to accessing community resources or treatment providers.

• Model and mentor recovery values, attitudes, and beliefs to encourage wellness and resilience for beneficiaries.

• Explore and encourage the creation of a wellness identity with the beneficiary through open sharing and challenging viewpoints.

• Personal Growth & Empowerment:

• Promote personal growth by identifying teachable moments and building relationship skills to empower the beneficiary and enhance personal responsibility.

• Model and share decision-making tools to enhance healthy decision-making.

• Provide examples of healthy social interactions and facilitate connection with the local community.

• Crisis Response & Support:

• Recognize and appropriately respond to emergency conditions, including physical and behavioral health crises, using the employer's emergency response procedure.

• System Navigation:

• Provide support to beneficiaries in navigating medical, social services, or legal systems.

• Promote self-advocacy by facilitating the beneficiary's learning about human and legal rights and supporting them in exercising those rights to empower them.

Education/Qualifications/Experience:

• The CPSS must self-identify as a person in recovery from a mental health or substance use disorder.

• Must have completed and can provide documentation of completion of the NC Certified Peer Support Specialist Program.

• CPSS shall not work outside the scope of their certification or core competencies.
