Job summary

Kansas City Public Library, in partnership with University Health, seeks a Certified Peer Engagement Associate to support library patrons facing behavioral health or substance use challenges. The role blends peer support, crisis intervention, and care coordination across library branches.

The library program emphasizes lived experience, recovery storytelling, and collaboration with library staff to reduce barriers and connect patrons with vital services.

Qualifications

• High School Degree or GED required.
• Must have strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Must have personal lived experience with recovery from behavioral health or substance use disorders.
• Must have CPS credential or obtain CPS credential within 9 months of hire.

Responsibilities

• Conduct patron and staff engagement within the library to build relationships and referrals.
• Peers remain visible and accessible to patrons and staff while on duty.
• Support effective customer interactions using de-escalation techniques and trauma-informed approaches.
• Collaborate daily with library staff and security to serve patrons with life challenges.
• Maintain appropriate confidentiality while sharing personal recovery story.
• Complete administrative tasks such as timesheets and documentation.
