Job summary

Penn State Health Hampden Medical Center is seeking a Patient Care Technician to support basic patient care, monitor heart rhythms, and assist the nursing team. You will observe telemetry, report irregularities, and troubleshoot monitoring issues under an RN's supervision.

The role requires a high school diploma or equivalent and BLS certification prior to orientation, with preferred BLS and ED/monitor tech experience or nursing student status to enhance readiness.

Qualifications

• BLS certification required prior to orientation completion. Must be obtained through Penn State Health or American Heart Association (AHA).
• Preferred: Current Basic Life Support (BLS).
• Preferred: Six (6) months of ED/ED OBS or monitor tech experience, heart arrhythmia course completion, or current nursing student.

Responsibilities

• Under the direction of a Registered Nurse, the Patient Care Technician performs basic patient care activities and related non-professional services to meet patient needs and comfort.
• Performs monitor technician duties including continuous observation of patient heartbeat patterns and reporting irregularities to the RN.
• Troubleshoots monitor issues, identifies probable causes, and seeks solutions to ensure monitoring is functioning correctly; tasks may vary by unit or department.

Under direction of a Registered Nurse, the Patient Care Technician contributes to the basic patient care activities and related non-professional services necessary in caring for the personal needs and comfort of the patient. The Certified Patient Care Technician is also responsible for performing monitor technician duties which include continuous observation of patient heartbeat patterns, noting heartbeat irregularities in the patients’ telemetry rhythm, ensuring that heart monitors are functioning correctly, and reporting any concerns to the RN in charge of the patient/charge nurse. Possess troubleshooting skills to recognize monitoring the problems, identify probable causes, and seek solutions to correct the problem. Actual job tasks may vary depending on the unit or department assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION(S)

• High School Diploma or equivalency required.
• BLS required prior to orientation completion. Must be obtained through Penn State Health or American Heart Association (AHA).
