Job summary

Northwestern Medicine is seeking a Certified Ophthalmology Technician for a full-time, day-shift role in Chicago. The technician will provide technical, clinical support and patient care across ophthalmology subspecialties, performing tests and assisting physicians as needed.

Responsibilities include exam work-ups, ancillary testing, patient education, instrument sterilization and room readiness, plus supply ordering.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience in Ophthalmology
  • CPR-BLS certification through American Heart Association
  • Certification as Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT)
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred

Responsibilities

  • Physician exam work-ups. Documentation requirements per physician expectations and special testing.
  • Ancillary testing, fields, biometries, glasses checks, etc.
  • Patient communication, messages, pre-post operative teaching and communication and instruction, telephone triage.
  • Surgical instrument preparation, cleaning and maintenance. Equipment maintenance and room preparation. Exam room stocking and cleaning.
  • Ordering of supplies, IOLs, instruments, medications, ocular supplies etc.
  • Instruction of medical students, new employees, residents, fellows and other staff.

TheTechnician, Certified Ophthalmicreflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.

The Technician, Certified Ophthalmic is primarily responsible for technical, clinical support and patient care for various physicians and sub-specialists in the department of ophthalmology. This includes various tests to be performed as well as supporting physicians as their needs arise. Acts as liaison between patients and physicians, answering questions and providing educational assistance.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in Ophthalmology field (i.e. as an Ophthalmic Assistant, COA)
Preferred:
  • Bachelor’s Degree
