Job summary

The Medical University Hospital Authority (MUHA) invites applications for a Regular Ophthalmic Technician in the Storm Eye Clinics. The role performs advanced eye exams, prepares instruments, maintains patient records, and supports surgical procedures.

A high school diploma and ophthalmic training are required, with COA/COT certification pursued if not yet obtained, and BLS current. This on-site hospital position features 40 hours per week, day shifts, and a strong emphasis on patient service

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two-year certified ophthalmic assistant program preferred but not required.
  • Certified as an Ophthalmic Technician (COT) or Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or eligible within one year.
  • BLS certification is required.
  • Non-certified employees have 12 months to obtain COA certification.
  • Minimum 2 years of specialized ophthalmic experience with a certified technician program.
  • Current BLS certification must be maintained.

Responsibilities

  • Perform advanced medical history taking and assess visual acuity.
  • Conduct slit-lamp exam, visual fields, color vision tests, refractometry and tonometry.
  • Assist with office surgical procedures and maintain accurate patient records.
  • Prepare exam rooms, stock supplies and ensure equipment is functional.
  • Screen patient calls and inquiries; follow Guest Relation Policy.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work.

Job Description Summary

Performs advanced medical history, checks patient's visual acuity, dilates patient's eyes. Performs basic slit-lamp exam, visual fields, color vision tests, lensometry, tonometry, keratometry, and refractometry. Assists with office surgical procedures. Maintains complete and accurate information in the patient's medical record. Prepares and maintains exam rooms to ensure they are adequately stocked with supplies and that all equipment and instruments are in proper working order. Prepare instruments for sterilization. Screen patient phone calls and questions. Follow Guest Relation Policy: Be polite, attentive and courteous to all patients at all times. Perform other related duties incidental to the work.

Job Description

Required Minimum Training and Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Completion of a two-year certified ophthalmic assistant program preferred but not required.

Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations: Certified as an Ophthalmic Technician (COT) or Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) through Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) or eligible for certification within one year. BLS required.

The non- certified employee will have 12 months from start date to obtain COA certification through Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology( JCAHPO). BLS required

Education: Education: High school diploma or equivalent (GED).

Experience: Minimum of 2 years of specialized ophthalmic experience with completion of a certified technician program.

Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations: Certification as a COT through Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) required and must be maintained throughout employment. Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification is required.
