Job summary

WVUH West Virginia University Hospitals seeks an Ophthalmic Assistant to join the Ophthalmology department. The role includes greeting patients, recording medical and ocular histories, and performing basic eye tests under supervision.

You will support instrument care, patient flow, and COA preparatory activities to advance toward COA certification. Responsibilities include visual acuity, tonometry, slit lamp exams, and instrument sterilization in a fast-paced clinic.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • COA certification through JCAHPO within 12 months of hire.
  • Basic Life Support certification within 30 days of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Escort patients to exam rooms.
  • Record accurate patient histories including ocular status and allergies.
  • Record accurate visual acuity for all ages.
  • Perform Visual Field testing, lensometry, and keratometry.
  • Measure and record spectacle prescriptions manually and with devices.
  • Conduct basic ocular motility testing and document results.
  • Assess pupil responses and intraocular pressure.
  • Perform and document slit lamp exams.
  • Sterilize instruments and maintain ophthalmic equipment.
  • Stock exam rooms and manage clinic inventory daily.
  • Maintain universal precautions and safety standards.
  • Move equipment between testing areas as needed.
  • Participate in COA preparation education and study.
  • Assist under supervision; may perform advanced testing for COA qualification.
  • Administer topical ocular medications as eligible.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:
  1. 1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. 2. Ophthalmic Assistant Certification obtained through JCAHPO within one (1) year of hire date.
  3. 3. Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.
CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. 1. Escorts patients to exam rooms.
  2. 2. Obtains and records accurate patient histories to include chief complaint, present ocular status, ocular history, and family history, past and present medical history, medications and allergies.
  3. 3. Obtains and records accurate visual acuity of adult, children and infant patients.
  4. 4. Performs Visual Field Testing, basic lensometry and keratometry.
  5. 5. Measures and records spectacle prescriptions both manually and with automated equipment
  6. 6. Performs basic ocular motility testing and record results.
  7. 7. Measures and compares basic pupil assessments.
  8. 8. Tests intraocular pressure with applanation tonometer and tonopen.
  9. 9. Performs and record slit lamp exam
  10. 10. Cleans and sterilizes ophthalmic instruments and maintain ophthalmic equipment.
  11. 11. Stocks examination rooms with supplies on a daily basis, maintain clinic inventory, and ensure working order of equipment.
  12. 12. Maintains universal precautions
  13. 13. Moves equipment to other testing areas of the clinic or hospital
  14. 14. Participates in educational instruction and independent study in preparation for COA Certification
  15. 15. Under the supervision of the provider, or certified technician, may perform more advance patient testing and advanced skills in order to obtain sufficient on the job training to meet the qualifications needed to acquire the COA certification required at one year of service.
  16. 16. Certification eligible testing assistants may administer topical ocular medications
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  1. 1. Work requires strength and /or stamina, lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing for long intervals ,frequent walking, and carrying materials or pushing equipment weighing 40 + lbs.
  2. 2. Vision correctable to at least 20/30 in one eye.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
  1. 1. Normal clinical environment. May be exposed to biohazards and communicable disease.
  2. 2. The incumbent will work in the presence of ophthalmic lasers frequently and be required to wear protective eye equipment.
  3. 3. May work with blood, lab specimens, and other patient bodily fluids that require universal precautions.
  4. 4. Travel to offsite clinics may be required
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  1. 1. The ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously in a high volume clinic
  2. 2. Ability to operate ophthalmic equipment and computers.
  3. 3. Analytical skills are desirable to complete the technical aspects of patient examinations.
