Job summary

Texas Children's West Wood Clinic in Houston is seeking a Certified Ophthalmic Technician to join the team providing ophthalmic technical support in the patient care area for patients from 0 to 18 years, and adults as needed.

The role requires a HS diploma or GED and JCAHPO-certified credentials (COA or COT) or OPTMTRST licensed Optometrist per Texas Optometry Board; minimum two years in an ophthalmology setting.

Qualifications

• HS Diploma or GED required.
• COA or COT certification (JCAHPO) or OPTMTRST license required or Texas Optometry Board license.

Responsibilities

• Performs preliminary measurements and exams on pediatric and adult ophthalmology patients.
• Performs visual acuity testing, color vision testing, lensometry, exophthalmometry, Amsler grid, Schirmer test, pupil evaluation, anterior chamber depth assessment, stereo testing, ocular motility, strabismus, and amblyopia assessments.
• Maintains basic ophthalmic instruments (ophthalmoscopes, retinoscopes, lensometers, perimeters, tangent screen, phoropter/trial frames, slit lamps, keratometers).
• Obtains ophthalmic history from patient or parent including presenting complaint, past ocular history, family history, systemic illness, medications, allergies and drug reactions, and developmental history.
• Coordinates ROP patients and provides administrative support.

• Required COA - Cert-Cert Ophthalmic Assistant Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) or COT - Cert-Cert Ophthalmic TECH by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO), or OPTMTRST - Licensed Optometrist by the Texas Optometry Board
• Required 2 years' experience in an ophthalmology or optometry office

Job Duties & Responsibilities

• Performs preliminary measurements and exams on both pediatric and adult ophthalmology patients.
• Performs visual acuity, color vision testing, lensometry, exophthalmometry, Amsler grid, Schirmer test, pupil evaluation, anterior chamber depth assessment, stereo testing, ocular motility on extraocular muscle actions, strabismus, amblyopia, and assessment methods on children and adults.
• Performs basic instrument maintenance on ophthalmoscopes, retinoscopes, lensometers, perimeters, tangent screen, phoropter/trial frames, slit lamps, keratometers, muscle light, surgical instruments.
• Obtains ophthalmic history from patient or parent including but not limited to, presenting complaint, past ocular history, family history, systemic illness, medications, allergies and drug reactions, review of systems, social history, and developmental history.
• Performs other essential job-related duties.
• Coordinates ROP patients.
• Provides Administrative Support.
