Responsibilities

A Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) plays a vital role in the rehabilitation and care of patients with various physical, mental, or emotional conditions. The primary goal of a COTA is to assist individuals in developing, recovering, improving, and maintaining skills needed for daily living and working. Key responsibilities include:

  • Patient Care Execution: Under the supervision of an occupational therapist, execute therapeutic plans, teach patients to use adaptive equipment, guide exercises, and facilitate activities essential for recovery.
  • Activity and Program Planning: Contribute to planning and selecting therapeutic activities tailored to each patient's needs and interests, aligning with therapeutic goals.
  • Progress Monitoring: Regularly observe, document, and report patient progress, adjusting interventions as needed to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Patient and Family Education: Educate patients and families about therapy processes, adaptive equipment, and home modifications, providing clear instructions to support ongoing recovery and independence.
Qualifications
  • Degree from an accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant program
  • Current license/certification in the state of practice
