Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant / COTA (PRN) (Healthcare)



Essential Duties
  1. Implements and executes an established patient treatment plan under the supervision of a licensed Occupational Therapist.
  2. Communicates with patient, families, referring physicians, and other members of the team.
  3. Provides timely written documentation per facility and department requirements.
  4. Develops and enhances clinical and professional skills through knowledge and professional association.
  5. Provides timely written documentation as required by insurance provider to meet licensing, certification, regulatory, reimbursement requirements.
  6. Supports and participates in department operations and development.
  7. Reports any changes in patient status or needs to supervising therapist on a timely basis.
  8. Prepares and submits patient charges accurately to provide appropriate billing information.
  9. Meets or exceeds the productivity standards as established with Supervisor.
  10. Uses professional judgment to ensure safety of self, patients, and others at all times.
  11. Achieves quality patient care through interdisciplinary communication.
  12. Attends required meetings as designed by the Director of Rehab and/or Supervisor.
  13. Effectively communicates with therapists concerning patients' response to treatment plan.
  14. Provides constructive feedback to rehab aides.
  15. Attends in-services, training sessions or other educational presentations.
  16. Coordinates treatment goals with other team members.
  17. Maintains valid licensure, certification or equivalent as requested by appropriate state agency.
  18. Maintains awareness of patient and community needs, conditions, and programs.
Supervisory Requirements

This position does not have supervisory requirements.

Education and/or Experience
  1. Associate Degree from an accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant program.
  2. One or more years of experience as COTA preferred.
Language Skills
  1. Able to understand and interpret complex written or verbal instructions.
  2. Excellent customer service skills and the ability to interact with patients and their families, team members, physicians, and other health care professionals.
Mathematical Skills

The ability to precisely follow a treatment plan an OT has developed is imperative.

Reasoning Ability
  1. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  2. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
  1. Certification as Occupational Therapy Assistant in the state of practice.
  2. Knowledge of principles, methods and equipment used in occupational therapy body mechanics.
Physical Demands
  1. Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday.
  2. Must be able to lift over 100 pounds with assistance according to the resident's abilities.
  3. Must be able to sit and walk for extended periods of time.
  4. Must be able to travel to reach assigned destination in a reasonable time frame.
  5. Must be able to bend, squat, push, stoop, and pull as needed especially in fulfilling patient care activities.
  6. Must be able to meet the general health requirements set forth by the policies of this facility, including undergoing physical examination.
