Job Title: Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA)

Department: Therapy Services

FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt

Employment Status: Part-Time

Location: Rehabilitation Services

Reports to: Therapy Services Director

Job Summary/Objective

Under the supervision of a Staff Occupational Therapist, the Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) conducts general activity programs and assists in implementing specific treatment programs for individual patients and patient groups. Services are provided in various settings, including schools, inpatient, outpatient, and home health environments.

Essential Functions/Duties/Responsibilities
  1. Assist the Occupational Therapist in planning and delivering treatment programs tailored to individual patient needs.
  2. Conduct general activity programs for patients as part of their therapy regimen.
  3. Implement specific treatment plans under the direction of a Staff Occupational Therapist.
  4. Monitor and document patient progress, ensuring accuracy and timeliness in record-keeping.
  5. Collaborate with patients, families, and caregivers to educate them on therapeutic activities and strategies.
  6. Maintain compliance with departmental policies, procedures, and safety standards.
  7. Prepare and maintain equipment, supplies, and treatment areas for therapy sessions.
  8. Participate in team meetings and provide input on patient care and progress.
  9. Adhere to professional standards and maintain certification requirements.
Education, Certificates, and Licenses
  • Associate’s Degree in Occupational Therapy Assistant Program required.
  • Current Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) certification.
  • Current licensure in Missouri or the ability to obtain.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS), active or within 30 days of hire.
Skills/Abilities
  • Ability to work under supervision while demonstrating initiative and independence.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for effective interaction with patients, families, and healthcare teams.
  • Proficiency in implementing therapeutic activities and documenting patient progress.
  • Organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and maintain accurate records.
  • Commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality and professional standards.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift and/or assist patients weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and bend for long periods during treatments.
  • Ability to kneel, crouch, and squat to assist with mobility and exercises.
  • Ability to perform manual therapeutic techniques.
  • Visual and auditory acuity for patient observation and safety.
  • Ability to drive to patient locations.
  • Proficiency with computers and office equipment for documentation.
  • Ability to handle stressful or emergency situations.
  • Ability to work with PPE in environments requiring infection control.
  • Ability to sustain physical activity throughout long shifts.
