Responsibilities

  • Treat patients referred for skilled occupational therapy in acute care and acute rehabilitation settings.
  • Provide education to patients and families and to other health care professionals.
  • Submit requests for durable medical equipment, adaptive devices, orthotics, and prosthetic needs.
  • Complete and submit all required patient documentation and billing in the EMR and related paperwork.
  • Supervise rehabilitation aides and volunteers.

Job Description

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery & Rehabilitation Medicine at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences is seeking a full-time TH Instructional Support Assistant / Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant.

Under the supervision of an Occupational Therapist, the successful candidate will:

  • Treatpatients referred for skilled occupational therapy in acutecareand acute rehabilitation setting, according departments standard of care.
  • Provide appropriate education to patient and family alike. Provides in s tru ct i on tothe patient, family m e mb e r s and ot h er health care professio n a l s i nvolved in the care of the patient.
  • Submit requests for durablemedical equipment and adaptive assistive devices, ort h o ti cs, and prosthetic needs.
  • Complete and su bm i t a ll required patientdocumentation andbilling in electronic medical record; and related patient care paperwork.
  • Providesupervision to rehabilitation a i desand vo lunt eers.
  • Coordinateand participatesin instructionalactivityforCOTA students, nurses, and house staff.
  • Assist in management ofOT in ve nt ory control, equipment, and records maintenance.
  • Assist in the s up e rvi s i on of department rehab aides per patient transport, department area/ equipment, management (transport schedule, equipment checks and related logs, department work ordersand deliveries, etc.).
  • Participate andassist in prn ongoingand new performanceimprovement (Pl)projects, gra n t projects, and occupational therapy clinical research.
  • Participateinpm community outreach educational and clinicalcare activities.
  • Participate andassist in departmentqualityimprovementinitiatives and related activities.
  • Adhere to a ll compliance r eg ul at i ons , li cens ure r e quir e ment s, and federal and state regulations.
  • Maintain department productivity standardsand procedures.
  • Model theWECAREvaluesof the institution.
  • Demonstrate the ability to carry out physical demands of lifting and physically assistingpatients during functional m obi li ty intervention; pushing of wheelchairs/stretchersand operation of DME and therapeutic eq ui pment.
Qualifications
  • Associate Degree in Occupational Therapy.
  • New York State Occupational Therapy Assistant License.
  • Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant.
  • 0 to 3+ years of Occupational Therapy Assistant experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • BLS / CPR Certification.
