Job Description/Summary

PRIMARY FUNCTION

The Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (C.O.T.A./L.) assists the Registered Occupational Therapist (O.T.R.) in providing rehabilitation therapy to patients of all ages with physical and psychosocial disabilities. Responsibilities include implementing treatment plans through activities of daily living, manual and creative skills, educational, recreational activities, and developmental skills tailored to patient needs. The goal is to improve physical function and promote mental adjustment.

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

• Delegate and assist in patient treatments under O.T.R. supervision.
• Ensure patient safety during therapy sessions.
• Maintain organization and cleanliness of the treatment area.
• Transport patients as needed.
• Maintain accurate departmental and patient records.
• Monitor supplies used for outpatient therapy.
• Chart daily patient progress.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/CONDITIONS

Involves bending, stooping, lifting patients and equipment, pushing wheelchairs and stretchers, adjusting equipment, and remaining alert to patient reactions. Ability to work under pressure occasionally.

Special Demands

Desire to work with individuals with disabilities, knowledge of medical terminology, arts and crafts skills, good judgment, confidentiality, and versatility in patient care are essential.

Qualifications

• Education: Completion of an accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant program and current certification.
• Experience: No prior experience required; desirable but not necessary.

Work Performed

• Assist in planning and evaluating therapy programs.
• Prepare and fit splints as ordered.
• Determine supply needs and report to O.T.R.
• Participate in in-service education.
• Prepare treatment areas.

Additional Details

Supervision: Supervised by a Registered Occupational Therapist.

Supervised Staff: Occupational Therapy Rehab Aide, Volunteers, Technicians.
