Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant

Overview

The Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) is responsible for providing rehabilitative care and occupational therapy services for home health patients. This includes assistance and training in ambulation, transferring, gait training, and home exercise programs. The position works under the supervision of a qualified Occupational Therapist, in accordance with the Home Health Plan of Care.

Responsibilities
  • Performs occupational therapy procedures in the patient’s home.
  • Assists the Occupational Therapist in the evaluation process through observation and surveys in areas such as perceptual motor skills, motor coordination, and sensory motor development.
  • Helps develop a treatment program to improve identified functional areas.
  • Instructs and assists patients in learning and improving functional activities.
  • Teaches body mechanics principles to patients and families.
  • Instructs on the proper use of prosthetic devices and therapeutic appliances.
  • Monitors patient’s progress and reports findings to the Occupational Therapist.
  • Reports changes in patient’s condition to the supervisor.
  • Modifies the Plan of Treatment as authorized by the physician and under supervision of the Occupational Therapist.
  • Prepares and submits clinical and progress notes in line with policies and regulations.
Qualifications
  • Must be a graduate of an ACOTE-accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant program.
  • Minimum two years’ experience as a COTA; community/home health experience preferred.
  • Must be certified by the AOTA as an Occupational Therapy Assistant.
  • Current license to practice as a COTA in Ohio or application in process.
  • Eligible for or has completed the NBCOT certification exam.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Maintains current CPR certification.
