We are looking for a Certified Nursing Assistant to join our Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) at HUP!

Consider joining our team as a Certified Nursing Assistant Inpatient in the Founders 8 Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) at The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP), located at 3400 Spruce Street, Philadelphia, PA. Penn Medicine’s Founders 8 MICU at HUP houses 12 beds and manages the care of critically ill medical patients with single or multisystem dysfunction. This varied patient population includes diagnoses such as acute respiratory distress syndrome, sepsis, renal failure, oncologic emergencies, cardiac arrest, and liver failure patients awaiting transplant. As a Certified Nursing Assistant in the MICU, you will deliver exceptional care with professionalism and compassion.

Summary:

  • The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) interacts with patients at the most intimate level and highest frequency. As an integral member of the healthcare team, the CNA demonstrates engagement, drives results with intention, partners with support, and serves with compassion. Working under the direct supervision of the registered nurse, the CNA's primary focus is to support and assist in delivering quality care to patients and families. Responsibilities include participation in RN/CNA hand-offs and unit huddles, timely collection and reporting of patient data, adherence to safety protocols, escalation of clinical data or conditions, remaining alert to unit activities, and demonstrating genuine care through active listening, timely responses, cultural sensitivity, and individualized care.

Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate genuine care for patients, including active listening, gentle care approaches, knocking before entering patient spaces, providing timely information, and respecting cultural sensitivities.
  • Participate actively in daily RN/CNA handoffs and unit huddles.
  • Communicate with patients to assess feelings or needs for assistance and emotional support.
  • Respond to patient call signals, lights, bells, or intercoms to determine needs.
  • Assist patients with daily activities such as getting out of bed, bathing, dressing, using the toilet, and mobility, while preserving dignity.
  • Notify and escalate clinical data or concerns promptly.
  • Gather information from caregivers, nurses, or physicians regarding patient conditions and treatment plans.
  • Record vital signs as directed, including temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and respiration rate.
  • Report observations of patient behavior, complaints, or symptoms to nurses.
  • Be flexible and adaptable to changing assignments based on patient acuity and unit needs.
  • Practice safe patient handling and maintain proper hand hygiene.
  • Support quality and safety initiatives, including QAPI goals.
  • Create a positive, caring, and healing environment for patients.
  • Focus on improving the patient experience continuously.

Credentials:

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (Required)
  • Certified Nurse Aid (Required)
  • CNA Certification by the State of Pennsylvania

Education or Equivalent Experience:

  • H.S. Diploma/GED (Required)
  • Enrollment in an accredited BSN Nursing Program is preferred; at minimum, completion of nursing foundations/fundamentals with a 3.0 GPA overall and in the nursing major.
