Job Description

The job of Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is done for the purpose/s of providing support to the school site operations with specific responsibilities for administering first aid and dispensing prescribed medications under the guidance of a registered nurse; coordinating with other personnel in supporting students with special needs; documenting activities in accordance with established guidelines and/or regulatory requirements; and assisting health care professionals in conducting prescribed health screenings and services. This position serves as a key contributor within the educational team.

This Job reports to Human Resources.

Essential Functions
  • Administers emergency first aid to students and, under the direction of a health professional, scheduled medications and specialized treatments for the purpose of meeting immediate health care needs for ill, injured and/or medically fragile students.
  • Assists health professionals in completing health screenings (e.g. vision, dental, hearing, back/scoliosis, height/weight, migrant student screening, sports physicals, etc.) for the purpose of identifying health concerns and/or delivering school health services and/or follow up to appropriate practices in compliance with established guidelines.
  • Attends meetings, workshops and seminars as assigned for the purpose of gathering information required to provide student medical care.
  • Cleans work areas (e.g. sinks, counters, laundry, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary work environment.
  • Communicates with parents, students, health care providers, and/or public agencies for the purpose of promoting needed treatment and/or complying with legal requirements.
  • Distributes information on a variety of health subjects (e.g. lice, ringworm, drug prevention, personal hygiene, etc.) for the purpose of providing instructional materials to teachers, students and/or parents.
  • Maintains inventory of medications and office supplies for the purpose of ensuring items availability as needed.
  • Maintains student health informational records (e.g. prescription dispensing log, medical emergency cards, etc.) for the purpose of providing information required by District regulations, and State law.
  • Monitors students referred to the health room for the purpose of ensuring their safety and/or referring to a medical professional for review and/or services.
  • Performs record keeping and clerical functions (e.g. data entry of medical alert status, immunization records, withdrawing students, answering calls, copying, faxing, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining health services activities.
  • Performs procedures for students as directed by a licensed health care professional (e.g. feeding tubes, catheterization, toileting plans, etc.) for the purpose of providing appropriate care for medically fragile students.
  • Reports suspected child or substance abuse to assigned site administrator for the purpose of maintaining student’s personal safety, a positive learning environment and adhering to regulatory requirements and established guidelines.
Other Functions

Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the nursing unit.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: implementing CNA procedures as directed by nurse; communicating effectively with students; operating standard equipment, including software processes.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: knowledge of District and State regulations related to student health care; knowledge of basic math processes; knowledge of CNA processes, in regard to implementing student health processes; District safety standards.

ABILITY is required to schedule activities and/or meetings; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and consider a number of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using defined methods. Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize job-related equipment. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: working cooperatively with nursing staff, students, families; assessing issues and solving problems; communicating with a diverse variety of individuals; supporting the nursing staff; working with interruptions; working as a member of a team.

Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized procedures; providing information and/or advising others; operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to have some impact on the organization’s services.

Work Environment

Generally, the job requires 30% sitting, 40% walking, 30% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.

Experience: Job related experience is required in nursing.

Education: Community college and/or vocational school degree with study in job-related area with an emphasis in CNA certification required.

Certificates/Licenses: CNA Certification & CPR/First Aid Certificate

Continuing Education: Mandated Reported Training, District Required Training

Clearances: Criminal Background Clearance, Family Care Safety Registry
