Job Description: Nursing Assistant

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: To perform a variety of work involving direct care and treatment to patients, exercising custody and supervision of patients consistent with nursing care and special treatment plans. Performs related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the supervision of a superior who outlines routine work assignments; specific instructions are given with each new or unusual assignment; work is reviewed in process and upon completion for conformance with standards of care, policies, procedures, and instructions.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Usually none.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Provide direct care and treatment to patients, including personal care such as baths, mouth care, perineal care, toiletry, hair care, and shaving.
  2. Assist with simple treatments like bandaging and administering enemas; support nurses with minor treatments.
  3. Lift and transfer patients safely, utilizing proper body mechanics.
  4. Conduct ward rounds, observe patient conditions, and report irregularities.
  5. Measure and record vital signs and other patient data.
  6. Collect and label specimens accurately.
  7. Transport and escort patients and assist with recreational activities.
  8. Maintain cleanliness and safety of the patient environment, including making beds and caring for personal effects.
  9. Implement infection control and disease prevention measures, including TB and bloodborne pathogens precautions.
  10. Clean and disinfect equipment and facilities used in patient care.
  11. Use comfort, safety, and restraint devices as required.
  12. Provide basic range of motion exercises.
  13. Assist with food services and feeding patients as needed.
  14. Collaborate with professional staff in treatment planning and quality assurance activities.
  15. Perform related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Capacities:

Knowledge of patient care practices, infection control, and minor treatments; ability to recognize patient needs and apply preventive, restorative, and rehabilitative care; ability to perform routine hospital tasks, understand instructions, maintain records, and work effectively as part of a healthcare team.

Education and Experience:

Sufficient ability to read, write, and speak English; training or employment experience in routine hospital or clinical patient care procedures; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Requirements:

Must be registered as a Nursing Assistant by the Rhode Island Department of Health at the time of appointment and maintain registration as a condition of employment.

Pre-Employment Requirements:
  • Proof of immunity against Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR)
  • Varicella (Chickenpox)
  • Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis (Tdap)
  • Hepatitis B titers
  • Tuberculin Skin Test (TST)
