Responsibilities

The Medical Assistant is responsible for working within a float pool at the various Baylor St. Luke's Medical Group Clinics to assist with supplemental staffing. The expert level Medical Assistant demonstrates a mastery level of proficiency in delivering patient care in the ambulatory care setting. Performs patient care responsibilities and provides clerical and administrative support in a clinical setting.

  1. Serves as a float pool resource to various clinics within designated, local region.
  2. Performs routine patient care responsibilities such as taking vital signs, venipuncture (blood draws), collect specimens, EKGs/ECGs, and POCTs.
  3. Collects patient history, performs medication reconciliation and enters information in the electronic medical record.
  4. Notes the primary complaint/reason for patient’s visit.
  5. Sets up instruments and equipment for medical provider (MD, DO, PA NP).
  6. Assists with procedures as needed.
  7. Administers medication under direction / order of a supervising medical provider (MD, DO, PA NP).
  8. Instructs patients on general care and medical procedures as appropriate to scope of practice for an MA.
  9. Maintains patient and service rooms in a neat and orderly condition.
  10. Schedules patient tests, procedures, and appointments.
  11. Conducts patient outreach phone calls and post visit follow-ups.
  12. Responds to routine patient phone calls and MyChart messages and routes to RN, ACP or Physician as needed.
  13. Performs clerical/administrative responsibilities such as filing and/or scanning patient medical records, obtaining lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, and referral information.
  14. Takes inventory of clinic supplies and orders supplies as needed.
  15. Supports the clinic / departments compliance with regulatory requirements.
  16. Performs functions of the Office Associate/ Patient Access Representative and is cross-trained to fill in this role as needed.
  17. Conducts Performance Improvement activities that support the clinic / departments goals for quality, patient experience, patient safety and/or efficiency.
  18. Sorts and distributes clinic mail and medical records to the appropriate clinic personnel.
  19. Flexible, dependable, hardworking, willing to work in a float pool position and be adaptable.
  20. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Current/valid Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) certification required or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) required if applicable.

Required Licensure and Certifications
Successfully completed Medication Aide 40-hour course or current/valid Medication Aide certification by state agency required if applicable.
Basic Life Support (BLS) or Advanced Care Life Support (ACLS) required. From American Heart Association.

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Training
Ability to perform EKGs, draw blood and administer injections.
Ability to effectively communicate to staff and patients.
Demonstrated knowledge of examination, diagnostic and treatment room procedures.
Through knowledge of the meaning and use of medical terminology and abbreviations.
Demonstrates sound judgment and composure with the ability to take appropriate action in questionable or emergency situations.
Maintains a positive, caring attitude towards patients.
Good computer skills using a medical management application.
Possesses a strong work ethic and a high level of professionalism.
