Job Summary: Geisinger offers outpatient Certified Medical Assistants a $3,000 bonus for eligible candidates. Geisinger has hundreds of community sites that allow Certified Medical Assistants to work to the top of their certification while providing top-notch care in an ambulatory setting.
Job Duties
- Provides direct patient care and clinical support for physicians and other providers in the outpatient setting.
- Functions as an integral member of the health care team under the provider's direction. Performs clinical duties such as preparing patients, collecting and reviewing pertinent information, performing technical duties, documenting using the electronic medical record, and supporting a safe environment for patients.
- Provides administrative and clerical support for the clinic/department including patient scheduling, filing reports, and following up on documentation, phone calls, and billing inquiries.
- Obtains and documents, using the rooming tool in the electronic medical record, the patient's reason for visit, weight, vital signs, visit screening information, medication review, and pertinent information for the provider.
- Sets up examination and treatment rooms between cases.
- Assists patients as needed to prepare for visits with providers, taking appropriate measures to ensure patient safety and privacy.
- Provides direct patient care as directed by the provider based on competency and clinic needs, such as performing EKGs, wound dressings, and supporting the provider during minor surgical procedures and examinations.
- Prepares and administers medications according to policy and procedure after validating knowledge and demonstrating competency. May not administer intravenous medications.
- Completes patient tests and treatments per provider’s order according to policy and procedure after validation of knowledge and demonstration of competency.
- Collects and prepares laboratory specimens and completes related paperwork to expedite studies.
- Performs phlebotomy and assists in laboratory functions related to testing, reporting, and quality assurance, as overseen by the laboratory.
- Performs receptionist and clerical duties supporting patient care, including filing reports and medical documents.
- Documents thoroughly in the medical record to ensure accuracy and completeness.
- Uses electronic medical record and scheduling systems as designated.
- Facilitates timely appointments, completes referrals, and handles pre-authorizations as needed.
- Collects co-payments.
- Assists with orientation of new personnel under the supervision of the provider or site lead.
- Manages patient communication, prioritizes messages, responds to patient inquiries, and ensures efficient provider use of time.
- Reinforces patient education as directed by the provider.
- May inventory medical and surgical supplies and pharmaceuticals to maintain adequate stock, verify expiration dates, and optimize organization.
- May access and transport non-controlled medications as necessary.
- Prepares and cleans instruments, following sterilization and disinfection protocols.
- Prepares examination rooms between patients, adhering to infection prevention standards.
- Inspects diagnostic equipment regularly to ensure proper operation and reports issues for maintenance.
- Participates actively in patient safety and quality improvement initiatives.
Work is typically performed in a clinical environment. Travel may be required. All job-specific obligations and organizational policies must be satisfied. Position Details
Hiring Incentive: This position qualifies for a $3,000 sign-on bonus paid over two years, with certain stipulations.
Position Requirements: Graduate of an accredited 1-year certificate or 2-year diploma Medical Assistant program preferred. Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) required. Certification by one of the listed governing bodies (NHA, AMT, AAMA, NAHP, NCCT, AAH, or AMCA) is required.
