Overview
The Endoscopy unit provides comprehensive care to more than 7,000 patients annually. Its mission is to deliver high‑quality, compassionate inpatient and outpatient endoscopic care, develop and evaluate new endoscopic technologies and procedures, and serve as a primary training site for gastroenterology fellows and surgical residents.
The CMA position with our Endoscopy team is primarily administrative in nature, but candidates must have prior clinical CMA experience to effectively support patients and providers. Our CMAs must be fluent with medical terminology as they perform pre‑calls for procedures and patient education, and they must also be comfortable with a high call volume and transporting patients within the hospital.
Scheduling
- Full‑time CMAs are required to work five 8‑hour shifts per week.
- Certified Medical Assistants work all three shifts, weekends and holidays. Individual shift rotation and schedules are established with the Nurse Manager/Practice Manager and may be adjusted as necessary to meet clinic requirements.
Responsibilities
- Support physicians and patients by performing pre‑calls for procedures and patient education.
- Assist with high call volume and coordinate patient transport within the hospital.
- Provide direct, age‑specific care to patients or groups of patients in accordance with medical orders and the plan of care under physician direction.
- Handle, transport, access to and/or contact with medications and related supplies.
- Provide patient care, emotional support and problem solving while following hospital, nursing and unit policies and procedures.
- Coordinate with supervisors for time/schedule changes, legal issues, directed care that deviates from the standard, and identification of educational resources to meet developmental needs.
Licensure, Certification and Registration
- Current Medical Assistant Certification through a recognized national professional association (e.g., American Association of Medical Assistants, American Medical Technologists, National Association of Healthcare Professionals, American Registry of Medical Assistants, National Healthcare Association).
- AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent.
Experience
- Required: One (1) year of medical assistant work experience within the last three (3) years if not a graduate of a medical assistant program; no work experience required if graduate of a medical assistant program.
- Prior experience using personal computers and various software applications, including Microsoft Office, e‑mail, etc.
- Demonstrated experience utilizing strong organizational, problem‑solving, communication and interpersonal skills.
- Preferred: Two (2) to three (3) years as a Certified Medical Assistant.
- Preferred: Previous experience in an academic health‑care environment.
Education
- Required: High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Preferred: Graduation from a medical assisting training program that is accredited by an organization such as CAAHEP or ABHES.
Independent Actions
- Functions under the direction of a licensed independent practitioner, manager and/or RN in providing patient care, emotional support and problem solving, all in accordance with hospital, nursing and unit policy/procedure.
- Requires prior approval or guidance from supervisor for time/schedule changes, legal issues, directed care that deviates from the standard, and identification of educational resources.
Physical Requirements
- Lifting 20‑50 lbs.
- Prolonged standing, sitting, frequent bending, walking, climbing (steps, ladder, other), reaching overhead.
- Strong recall, reasoning, problem‑solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, reading, logical thinking.
- Ability to handle a fast‑pace environment, manage multiple priorities, and adapt to frequent change.
