Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) – UCS Healthcare – West Des Moines, Iowa, United States

UCS Healthcare is seeking a full‑time Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) to support both our Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) program and Family Practice clinic. Competitive hourly wage and benefits package are provided.

Job Summary

The CMA will provide comprehensive medical care within scope of practice, including patient care, documentation, and communication with clinic patients. The role requires cooperation with other medical professionals in a team environment while maintaining professional medical standards. The CMA promotes effective medical assisting practices to achieve quality, cost‑effective patient care and satisfaction.

Essential Functions (60%)
  • Perform patient care using evidence‑based practices and established standards to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Handle emergency situations efficiently following protocols.
  • Communicate effectively, identifying and resolving problems and using lines of authority appropriately.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a care team.
  • Triage phone calls and report to RN, ARNP, PA or physician as required.
  • Conduct assessments and collect data systematically within scope of practice.
  • Receive and follow up on written and verbal orders from providers.
  • Schedule appointments.
  • Document accurately and promptly in electronic medical record.
  • Collect program‑specific data and enter into systems.
  • Scan and upload documents.
  • As part of the Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) Team:
    • Administer and coordinate drug screenings, including urinalysis collection and breathalyzer testing.
    • Maintain cleanliness of the dosing area and urinalysis restroom.
    • Inform nursing staff of client needs.
    • Count patient prescription pills and notify nurse of inconsistencies.
    • Maintain and distribute accurate medical records.
  • As part of the Family Practice Team:
    • Room patients and assess vital signs and reason for visit.
    • Administer medications and evaluate effectiveness.
    • Perform venipuncture while maintaining safety standards.
    • Record medication orders accurately and promptly.
    • Obtain consent from patients.
Other Functions (40%)

  • Perform within the scope of practice and maintain medical assisting standards.
  • Participate in agency meetings to improve patient care.
  • Schedule patients appropriately within provider parameters.
  • Implement educational materials and evaluate their effectiveness.
  • Participate in orientation of new personnel.
  • Implement and maintain Opioid Treatment Standards under CARF, state, federal, and agency rules; perform additional duties as assigned.
  • Complete required training promptly.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Required Knowledge, Education, Experience, Skills, and Abilities
  • Unencumbered CMA certification held and maintained.
  • Minimum 1 year of medical office experience.
  • Competence in required computer applications.
  • Venipuncture skills.
Physical Requirements
  • Regular phone or email accessibility to address operational needs.
  • Communicate effectively with others.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods and use a computer.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, squat, crouch throughout the day.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation; travel within Iowa may be required.

This position is scheduled to work Tuesday–Friday from 9 am to 5 pm and Saturday from 6 am to 2 pm.
