Job summary

UNC Health Care is hiring a Certified Medical Assistant to interview patients, document HPI, reconcile medications, and collect specimens in our North Carolina clinics. The CMA will perform vital signs, assist with procedures, and deliver test results while maintaining EMR documentation and a safe clinical environment.

Required are a current Medical Assistant certification (CCMA, CMA, RMA, NCMA, ARMA) and a BLS certification, plus the ability to lift supplies and navigate a busy clinical area.

Qualifications

• Must hold a current Medical Assistant certification (CCMA, CMA, RMA, NCMA, ARMA).
• Must hold current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Ability to lift supplies and navigate clinical areas regularly.
• Preferred: Prior work experience in a clinical setting.

Responsibilities

• Interview patients to collect and document history of present illness (HPI), medications, and allergies.
• Measure vital signs and perform standard testing per clinic procedures.
• Coordinate and perform follow-on procedures as directed by a provider, including onsite testing, specimen collection, and wound care.
• Assist with provider-performed procedures such as suturing or splints.
• Communicate with patients about care and test results; explain policies clearly and with cultural competency.
• Document care in the EMR and ensure complete forms.
• Collect and prepare testing specimens for transport to the offsite lab.
• Maintain supplies and medications for safe ongoing clinical operations.
• Promote a safe, clean clinical environment with standard precautions and infection control.

Summary:

The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) interviews and initiates care for patients who visit our clinics and plays key roles in the care provided, up to and including specimen collection and delivery of test results.

Responsibilities

• Communicates with patients in a timely and effective manner regarding their care. Notifies patients of test and lab results. Patiently and clearly explains practice policies and procedures using cultural competency and active listening.
• Documents care into electronic medical recordkeeping system (EMR). Ensures completion of necessary documentation and forms.
• Collects and prepares testing specimens as needed for transport to offsite laboratory.
• Maintains and monitors consumable supplies and medications for effective ongoing clinical operations.
• Promotes a safe, clean and secure clinical environment for all, including the application of standard precautions and principles of infection control.

Required:

• Must hold a current Medical Assistant certification. Accepted forms of the credential are:
  • Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) as issued by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA)
  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) as issued by American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)
  • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) as issued by the American Medical Technologists (AMT)
  • Medical Assistant (NCMA) as issued by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)
  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) as issued by the American Registry of Medical Assistants (ARMA)
• Must hold current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
• Position will require the ability to lift supplies and equipment regularly and navigate clinical area actively throughout work.

Preferred:
