Responsibilities
Under the direction of the healthcare provider, the Medical Assistant is responsible for delivering patient care that promotes safety and wellbeing. This includes performing preliminary physical tests such as measuring blood pressure, recording weight, temperature, pulse, and respirations, among other duties as per clinical protocols.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform general patient care following established standards and procedures.
- Greet patients and prepare them for the healthcare provider.
- Obtain and record vital signs, including blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration, height, weight, allergies, medications, and presenting problems.
- Draw and collect blood samples and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis if required.
- Administer medications and vaccines via oral, injection, topical, rectal, ophthalmic, or inhalant routes as ordered.
- Perform routine tests such as EKGs.
- Schedule diagnostic tests and follow up to ensure completion.
- Communicate test results and care plans with patients by phone or mail as directed.
- Maintain instruments and equipment, keep exam rooms stocked, clean, and sterilized, and dispose of contaminated items properly.
- Document patient care, tests, and examination results in medical records as directed.
- Escalate non-routine issues to the practice manager or healthcare provider.
- Ensure safety checklists and quality controls are completed as required.
- Protect patient safety and privacy rights.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the practice manager, MA Lead, or healthcare providers.
Qualifications
Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Completion of a Certified Medical Assistant course preferred.
Licensure/Certifications:
- Current Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) certification required, if applicable.
- Active American Heart Association BLS certification within 30 days of hire.
Experience:
- 2 years of Medical Assistant experience preferred.
- Experience with electronic health records preferred.
