Responsibilities

  • Perform preventative maintenance and inspections on ambulances and fleet vehicles.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, suspension, brake and other systems.
  • Oil changes, brake service, tire work, battery replacement and fluid checks.
  • Troubleshoot electrical systems, emergency lighting, sirens and related components.
  • Inspect vehicles for safety and readiness; maintain records.
  • Use diagnostic equipment to troubleshoot vehicle issues.
  • Coordinate with Fleet leadership on major repairs.
  • Assist with installation or modification of vehicle equipment.
  • Ensure vehicles are returned to service after maintenance.
  • Follow OSHA, DOT, manufacturer and TRAA safety requirements.

Summary:The Certified Mechanic is responsible for maintaining, inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and ensuring the safe and reliable operation of TRAA's ambulances, emergency response vehicles, and associated equipment. This position performs preventative maintenance, diagnoses mechanical and electrical issues, completes repairs, and ensures all fleet vehicles meet company safety, operational, and maintenance standards.

The Certified Mechanic plays a critical role in keeping TRAA's fleet safe, reliable, and available for emergency response at all times.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform preventative maintenance and routine inspections on TRAA ambulances, fleet and employee vehicles, as well as fleet vehicles maintained by TRAA under contractual service agreements.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, suspension, brake, steering, cooling, and other vehicle systems.
  • Perform oil changes, brake service, tire replacement and repair, battery replacement, fluid checks, and other routine maintenance.
  • Troubleshoot and repair vehicle electrical systems, emergency lighting, warning systems, sirens, and other emergency vehicle components.
  • Inspect vehicles for safety concerns and identify repairs necessary to maintain operational readiness.
  • Diagnose vehicle problems using appropriate computerized diagnostic equipment and other testing tools.
  • Respond to vehicle breakdowns and other fleet-related maintenance issues as needed.
  • Complete repairs in accordance with manufacturer recommendations, applicable standards, and TRAA procedures.
  • Maintain accurate records of inspections, preventative maintenance, repairs, parts, and labor.
  • Coordinate with Fleet leadership regarding vehicles requiring significant repairs or removal from service.
  • Work with outside vendors and repair facilities when specialized repairs or services are required.
  • Maintain an organized, clean, and safe work area.
  • Monitor inventory of commonly used parts, fluids, tools, and supplies and communicate ordering needs.
  • Assist with installation, removal, or modification of vehicle equipment as needed.
  • Ensure vehicles are properly inspected and returned to service following maintenance or repairs.
  • Follow all applicable OSHA, DOT, manufacturer, and TRAA safety requirements.
  • Properly use, inspect, and maintain tools, diagnostic equipment, lifts, and other shop equipment.
  • Participate in emergency or after-hours fleet support when assigned or required.
  • Assist with general building and facility maintenance, including minor electrical and plumbing repairs, light fixture replacement, painting, furniture and desk repairs, and other routine maintenance needs throughout TRAA facilities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • All ASE A-Series Automobile and Light Truck Certifications Required.
  • Must maintain required ASE certifications throughout employment.
  • Previous professional automotive, fleet, or heavy-duty vehicle mechanic experience required.
  • Experience working on ambulances, emergency vehicles, commercial vehicles, or heavy-duty vehicles preferred.
  • Strong mechanical and diagnostic skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret service manuals, wiring diagrams, and technical information.
  • Proficiency with computerized diagnostic equipment and automotive testing tools.
  • Ability to safely operate mechanic tools, vehicle lifts, and other shop equipment.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain any additional certifications or licenses required by TRAA or applicable regulatory standards.
Physical Requirements
  • The position requires frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, reaching, climbing, and working in confined or awkward positions. The employee must be able to lift and move tools, equipment, parts, and vehicle components and safely perform the physical duties associated with vehicle maintenance and repair.
  • The position may require working outdoors and in varying weather conditions, as well as exposure to noise, vehicle fluids, grease, dirt, fumes, and other conditions commonly associated with automotive and fleet repair.
  • The Certified Mechanic primarily works in a fleet maintenance/shop environment but may occasionally work at TRAA stations, vehicle breakdown locations, or other field locations.
  • The position may require work outside of normal business hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, or emergency call-back situations, based on operational needs.
