Job summary

Bering-Alaka`ina Holdings, LLC is seeking a Certified HVAC Technician to provide technical support for our government customer at Ft. Detrick, Maryland. The role covers maintenance, calibration and troubleshooting of HVAC/R systems in a high-security laboratory environment.

The technician must hold Maryland Master HVAC or journeyman license with experience, plus EPA refrigerant recovery and OSHA forklift certifications. On-site work, potential for shift work and on-call duties may apply.

Qualifications

  • Master HVAC license or journeyman HVAC license with experience to obtain Master HVAC license in Maryland/DMV area.
  • At least 3 years of active HVACR experience under supervision of a master.
  • EPA Universal Refrigerant Recovery Certification.
  • OSHA Forklift Operator Certification.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain mechanical and HVACR systems, plumbing and heating systems.
  • Repair and modify systems to meet technical specifications.
  • Test, repair, calibrate and maintain HVAC/R equipment and controls.
  • Troubleshoot and calibrate DDC controls and VAV systems in lab environments.
  • Follow EPA regulations and institute SOPs; ensure safety and security procedures.

Job description

Bering-Alaka`ina Holdings, LLC is looking for a Certified HVAC Technician to provide technical support to our government customer located in Ft. Detrick, Maryland.

DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Technician shall maintain technical competency of mechanical equipment, engineering principles, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC), plumbing and heating systems.
  • Receive assignment with a minimum of accompanying instructions concerning the work methods to be used. May work directly with engineer, research or testing personnel while maintaining planning and modifying a system to meet specific conditions. Expected to perform repair and modification to meet conditions which are required by technical personnel.
  • Test, repair, modify, calculate, operate, maintain, overhaul and calibrate small to large industrial air conditioning units, small to large refrigeration coolers and freezers, chiller systems, small to industrial humification and dehumidification systems, air cleaners, heat pumps, clean room systems, small to industrial ventilation and exhaust systems, pneumatic systems, propane, steam and electrical heating systems, small to 150 horsepower reciprocating and screw compressors, electrical lines, circuits, systems, subsystems, controls, fixtures with their relays, switches, receptacles, and controllers.
  • Troubleshoot, install, test, repair, modify, relocate, maintain, and calibrate refrigeration equipment, air conditioning equipment, pneumatics controls, DDC controls, VAV's systems during malfunctions and for daily operations.
  • Troubleshoot, maintain, build graphics, upgrade controllers, program, upload/download and calibrate DDC controls to include JCI Metasys, Honeywell Tritium and Schneider Electric Continuum systems in a laboratory interment.
  • Maintain, verify and correct issues on equipment to include freezers, refrigerators, walk-ins, pressure, temperature, humidity and light sensors. Maintains detailed maintenance and service reports/logs on all equipment in accordance with institute SOPs and regulatory compliance procedures. Follow all institute standard operating procedures, safety, security and security procedures and practices while repairing and maintaining the buildings HVAC/R systems and equipment. Ensures all EPA rules and regulations pertaining to refrigeration and air conditioning systems outlined in 40 CFR Part 82 Sub Part F.
  • Interpret diagrams, drawings, technical manuals, and other instructions for air conditioning equipment, building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, and engineering drawings and use trade formulas.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot a variety of complex electrical systems and equipment such as series, parallel, and compound circuits for single and multiple phase alternating current of varying voltage, amperage, and frequency; wiring systems in industrial complexes and in buildings; and power or regulating and control circuits and distribution panels to industrial machinery, computers, clean rooms or other electrical equipment.
  • Use tools and equipment to include sliding squares, measuring tapes, grinders, power tools, cutters, pipe wrenches, volt, amp, ohm meters, thermometers, torches, computers, manometers, airflow measuring equipment, vacuum pumps and various hand tools.
  • Utilize air balance principles and equipment to rebalance VAV's, Phoenix valves, dampers, and fan coil units for office, animal rooms and laboratories throughout the facility as required.
  • Performs work in bio-containment suites (BSL-3 and BSL-4) in the presence of highly hazardous infectious agents and toxins and is required to participate in Bio-surety Personnel Reliability System and Formaldehyde Program. Work within the Formaldehyde program include clearing airlocks and penthouse spaces after decons as well as airlock washdowns.
  • Assures that work assignments, procedures, sequence, methods, and deadlines are completed on time.
  • Responsible for independently planning and carrying out the assignment based on an understanding of the purpose and use of the end item.
  • May be required to work on second or third shift with little notice and will serve as an on-call technician for one-week periods during regular shop rotations.
  • Mechanic must be able to be contacted and respond to emergency for after-hour calls during the on-call periods within one hour.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
REQUIRED DEGREE/EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:
  • MD: Master HVAC License (Unlimited) OR currently hold a journeyman HVAC license or higher level with the required experience to obtain a Master HVAC license including:
  • Licensed as a journeyman and regularly and principally employed to provide all areas of HVACR services for at least three (3) years of active experience under the direction and control of a HVACR master.
  • Have worked a minimum of 1,875 hours in the year prior to applying for the master license
  • Maryland has a reciprocity agreement for HVAC licenses with Virginia and Delaware.
  • EPA: Universal Refrigerant Recovery Certification Certificate.
  • OSHA-Approved Forklift Operator Certification
  • Basic Quality Assurance (QA) Training for Maintenance/Construction
REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Ability to plan and complete work with minimal to no supervision or with a team of HVAC/R & Building Controls Team, welder, machinists, electricians, and maintenance mechanics.
  • Deals with Uncertainty, Basic Safety, Power Tools, Attention to Detail, Flexibility, Job Knowledge and Productivity.
  • Strong working knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, and heating systems.
REQUIRED CITIZENSHIP AND CLEARANCE:
  • Must be a US Citizen.
  • Must be able to obtain/maintain BPRP status and BSL-3/4 access in accordance with AR 190-17 and local policies.
  • Must be able to obtain/maintain a DoD SECRET clearance.
COMPENSATION DETAILS
  • $100,000.00-$105,000.00
  • The compensation range or hourly rate provided is a good faith estimate at the time of posting. Final compensation will be determined based on qualifications, experience, skills, internal equity, market conditions, and applicable laws.
